And, 10, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shown about them; and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not; for behold, I bring unto you good tidings of great joy, which shall be unto all people. For unto you is bom this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: Glory to God in the Highest, and on Earth Peace, Good Will Toward Men!
* . THE. yuklojj The Yule Log tradition is making a comeback as more and more of today's modern homes are designed with open fireplaces as well as central heating and gas stoves. For those who have a place to burn a Yule log and want one, tradition says that it should be oak, ash, olive, apple or pine. Whatever type you choose or may be able to acquire, get plenty of wood. Ash is highly desirable since it can be used without being seasoned. It bums quickly, and throws off plenty of heat Poplar, on the other hand, will spark badly if unseasoned. Elm is less desirable since it is slow to get started. However, it lasts a long time and brightens up when it gets going. A few logs of birch, pine or fir will help it along. Beech and oak are among the best logs. Beech has a pleasant aroma and gives off a steady glow. Oak has the outstanding merit of burning slowly. If none of these are available, select wood from some kind of fruit tree. Such wood gives off a pleasant smell when burning. Egg Nog Custom Dates Back to Early Custom The custom of Inviting friends and relatives in for cocktails or egg nog during the holiday season, so popular in America today, dates back to the old English practice of “wassailing." In Elizabethan times, no celebration was complete without the wassail bowl filled to the brim with pungent ale—a cheery invitation to all to come in and help celebrate the Yule. Then, as the guests raised their steaming mugs in a toast to Christmas, the merry cry of "What Haill" “Wassail!" would ring Joyously through the ball I

Let Children Help Prepare for Holiday Children learn the real meaning of Christmas when you let them participate in preparations and activities. Making gifts for spmeone special is a project that even a three-year-old can do. Children can fill pretty Jars with sand to make attractive doorstops. They can make clove apples to add spice to handkerchief drawers. Even their simple drawings make gifts that parents cherish. Baking cookies and making Christmas decorations also put children in spirit of things. And even small children can string popcorn and cranberries tor tree trimmings. Deeper Meaning Making Christmas cards shows children that there is more to the cards than the, actual sending. You J particularly want friends to know you are thinking of them at Christrnas time, and children can learn this early. Music is a part of Christmas and offers another opportunity to put meaning into the holiday for children. who enjoy singina. • * — Ml<fW Gift Buying Simplified By Making Shopping Lisi Your Gift shopping will be easier and less fatiguing if you decide ! what you want to buy and make a ) list before you shop. K is wise to list alternate choices so that you won't limit yourself to only one idea. You may want to see what is in the stores, make a list and then make a second trip to do the actual buying. Your list will help you shop systematically. Catalogs can also be helpful in getting suggestions. Most large department stores, specialty shops and mail order houses have catalogs. So. why spend hours looking for gifts when you can shop or prepare your "want list" from your armchair. Sitting comfortably at home, you can choose from a greater variety of merchandise and at the same time conserve your time and enerr»
FflaL ntf [W Tree For the family which prefers a small tree, an evergreen can serve as the traditional Christmas decoration during the holidays and later take its place in the family yard as an ornamental tree. Forestry experts say that the live tree has a reasonable chance of survival If several rules are followed. First, careful digging is necessary to insure that the whole root system is removed with the tree. The evergreen should be thoroughly watered from the moment it is potted. The tree should be kept in the house a minimum amount of time, since the heat of the house often forces the buds to break .out. These will freeze when the tree is transplanted outdoora Short-needled varieties of evergreen make the best potted trees. These include balsam, white and Dauglass fir and blue, white, red and Norway spruce. The foliage of pines is too sparse at the threefoot height to make them suitable as table trees I I* » a wr ~W]THot Punches Gain New Holiday Popularity Hot punches, gaining new popularity in America, have never gone out of favor in England where punch bowls are a frequent sight, usually of polished silver to hold hot brews. These zesty punches may be mild or glowing. For mild drinks there is spiced tea with cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg added before brewing, then combined with heated fruit juices. For glowing drinks there is Mulled Cider, simmered with spices and served with floating orange slivers; or the traditional Tom and Jerry, served untraditionally early, its brandy frothy with egg, and spiced.

Christmas is the season of Joy and peace, yet quite often carelessness causes it to be a time of tragedy. Fire hazards are about us everywhere during the holiday season. The majority of us overload our home electrical systems during the season and practically everyone brings a Christmas tree into the house without first spraying It with a fireproof substance. Holiday fires are needless. Don't use more lights than you need to make your tree look bright and cheerful and have your electrical system carefully checked even before you install any lights at aIL Bay Fresh Tree Don't let a tinder-dry Christmas tree spoil your holiday. Be certain your tree to fresh when you buy it Keep it in water at all times and do not bring it into the house until a day or so before Christmas. Do npt place the tree near a fireplace or heating unit Dispose of the tree when it begins U> shed its needles a lot Be sure that aD decorations used in the home are fireproof Do not 1 use lighted candles as a part of your Christmas decorations. They are much more dangerous than decorative. Cheek Wiring If your string of lights are not new, check the insulation on the wiring carefully as it tends to become brittle with age and use. Use only approved lights and wiring for outdoor decorations. Indoor wiring tends to short when used outside. If you burn a Yule log in your fireplace to observe the holiday, be sure to use a screen and keep household items and other articles a safe distance from the fireplace.
