Negative Scientific Report On Turkeys No Infection For Eaters Os Turkey By DELOS SMITH nited Press Science Editor NEW YORK (UP) — Scientists are objectively factual (you will please understand) and that is why Christmas this year comes at the same time as a highly negative scientific report on the turkey. “Nice things are to be said about the noble bird," the report acknowledged in its beginning, and thereafter said nothing nice about it at all. Indeed, the turkey “lately has become notorious,” the reason being that science can demonstrate that turkeys are "a, reservoir” of the virus which causes the disease, ornithosis. Same As Parrot Fever Ornithosis is the same disease as parrot fever or psittacosis. From the standpoint of a human victim, the difference is in whether he picked up the virus from a sick turkey or a sick parrot or parakeet. However, from the viewpoint of people who have no other contact with the turkey than to eat one at Christmas and Thanksgiving, there is not even a semblance of anything to worry about. All infected human beings have been turkey growers and processors — persons in contact with flocks of the living bird. Health authorities in o._- turkey-growing states enforce strict regulations. The report based its reservoir charge against the turkey on the fact that Epidemics of the disease periodically break out in widely scattered turkey flocks. In all cases there was no way for the virus to get from an infected flock to an uninfected one. Exists in Unaffected Flock Therefore, the virus must have existed in the uninfected flock all along. Then what caused the inactive virus suddenly to become active and to start sickening and killing turkeys? That’s the nice question about this virus disease science must answer somehow. But all virus disease are loaded with unanswered questions. The report was contained in a' technical periodical c ire ulat ed among physicians by the Abbott Laboratories. North Chicago. The issue with the negative turkey repbrt was labeled "special Christmas edition.” Reviewing all that is known scientifically about the virus, the report noted its strange behavior. There are avirulent — that is, utterly harmless — strains. These strains have been found in areas where the killing strains were infecting flocks. Is there an unknown mechanism which makes a harmless strain suddenly harmful? GIRARD "(Continu«o uom relatives, and his bride for a reunion with his ailing mother at Ottawa. Neither the Army nor Girard would disclose what sort of discharge he was given. AWARD (€ontinuga tram Pago One) various types of equipment were the Will Ross company of Milwaukee and the Hillman China company of Fort Wayne. Drew stated that all of the bids, were carefully studied by the trustees and the contract on each item was given to the company submitting the best bid for that particular item. Most of the bids submitted were for various types of equipment. The total cost of these general items, Drew stated, is about $17,000. All of the equipment is to be available within 60 days. Drew pointed out that bids are still to be received on furniture and on major equipment for the surgical department. Legal advertising for bids wlil be run in the near future and these bids will be accepted sometime in January. Jones said he had been given the SI,OOO in cash by James Spence Galloway, a service station owner, for the purpose of getting Galloway a new trial on a conviction for concealment of stolen property. Jones said he then met "by chance” Harold Brown, now assistant state attorney and then special prosecutor on the Galloway case, and Boling, secretarytreasurer of Local 515. Brown testified that Jones volunteered the contribution without discussing tfie Galloway case and he took it to Schoolfield knowing nothing about any arrangement. Trade in a good town — Decatur
