Commodores Lose To Hoagland Wildcats In Overtime Tilt, 75-74

The Decatur Commodores and Hoagland Wildcats staged a real thriller for,the fans Tuesday night at the Decatur gym, with the Wildcats barely edging out a ,75-74 triumph after a stirring overtime battle. The Commodores had waged an uphill battle most of the way, with Phil Reed’s sixth field goal of the game knotting the score at 65-65 with just two seconds of playing time remaining t osend the contest into the tnree-mlnute overtime. The Wildcats pulled away in a hurry in the extra session. Ronnie Johnson hit from underneath and added a free throw when fouled for a 68-65 lead in the first 15 seconds. Bob Miller hit a fielder for a five-point advantage, and after Reed dropped in a free throw, Johnson netted a brace of foul tosses and Miller followed with another three-point play and. Hoagland looked safely home with h 75-66 advantage and less than Iwo minutes to play. But the Commodores refused to quit. Tom Meyer hit from the field. Paul Gross dropped in a charity point and Wilder hit twice from the foul line and Hoagland’s Lead had melted to 7>71, with 41 seconds to play. Meyer hit a free throw with 22 seconds to go, and after he missed his second attempt, Reed grabbed the rebound for an easy layup and the Commodores trailed by only one point. The Commodores regained the ball when Reed intercepted a long pass in backcourt. Die Depatur lads worked the ball down but the shot that would have won the game fell short and the Commodores had dropped a heartbreaker. The first quarter was close until the last minute and a half, when Hoagland shot into a 20-12 lead. The Commodores whittled away steadily at the deficit, and finally worked into a 34-34 tie on a pair of free throws by Dave Kable, but Johnson hit a fielder for a 36-34 margin for Hoagland at the half. The teams were tied four times ih. the third quarter, but the Commodores the started hitting in sensational style, paced by Dave Kable’s five two-pointers in six shots, and Decatur had a 50-42 bulge, their largest of the game,
