Dickens Urges fol' !<■” ' r..l<’ dj LU. Graduates Obtain Players INDIANAPOLIS (UP)—lndian* football'coach Phil Dickens, in his first public appearance since he , won reinstatement by the Big Ten last .-.week. .Monday night urged Hoosier alumni to start hunting for personnel. The former Wyoming mentor, penalized last summer before be could cpach his first game at Indiana fdr violating the conference’s aid to athletes code, bluntly told the alumni they will be responsible, for the caliber of future Hoosier teams. ‘‘We need boys who have heart and desire and the proper mental attitude,'* said Dickens. “Eighty per cant of success depends on material, 10 per cent on luck, injuries and weather, 9 per cent on coaching, and 1 per cent on strategy." Dickens spoke at an Indiana alumni club banquet at which the 1957 Hoosier team, which won only one game and finished in the Big Ten cellar, was honored. Dickens said Indiana carried 19 Indiana boys on this year's freshman team, believed to be the largest state groqp ever. However, he was cautious about the future. "We can’t say too much right now," he said. “We have to get together and view pictures of past games and take a look at the freshmen." Dickens said the planned construction of Indiana's new stadium, with a seating capacity of about 55,000, “can account for 30 or 40 per cent of recruiting boys,” Assistant IU athletic director Bob Dro outlined three steps necessary to guarantee Indiana a winning football team: Locate a prospect, sell him on Indiana, transport him to the campus. "We need salesmen and saleswomen capable of selling prospective athletes on Indiana “University," said Dro. ’ ; Line coach Bob Hicks, who piloted the Hoosiers during the past season in the absence ok Dickens, praised his undermanngjf ’ charges:, .. . ! "They gave us everything had,” said Hicks. regrete w Cuyahoga County. Ohio, which includes Cleveland* leads all other counties in the .country amount of vegetable gardens der glass.
