Two Policemen Are Kidnaped By Gunmen Two Illinois Cops Handcuffed To Tree COLLINSVILLE. 111. <UP*-Four thugs kidnaped two policemen, handcuffed them to a tree and argued about killing them in an early morning fog, it was reported today. A conversation in Italian probably saved the lives of Dominic Gfcrfre, 36, a merchant policeman, and John Cagnola. 32, a member of the Collinsville police department. Giofre said he and Cagpola were patrolling Collinsville in a heavy fog early Sunday morning. Four men in another car hailed them to ask directions to a “hydroelectric plant," Giofre said. He told them there wasn’t any in the Collinsville area. Then, apparently afraid the policemen had recognized them, the

; men pulled guns. Two of them disI armed the policeinetf and climbed I into the police can telling Giofre to drive to a highway. The other two forced Cagnola 1 into their car and trailed the capItured squad car. Handcuffed to Tree Giofre said they passed an Illinois state police car headed in the .opposite direction. “If that patrol jear turns around,” a man called "Johnson” by the other kidnapt'rs 'told Giofre, “you'll be dead.” The; state police car continued |on itg way, and the two cars turned Into a side road near a ■ stewag4 plant where the gunmen handcuffed the policemen to a tree. “If we kill them they won't I identify us,” Giofre quoted Johnj son. A scuffle between the criminals broke out. and Johnson warned the others “Get out of my way. or I'll kill you, too.” i Johnson pumped a shell into a riot gun taken from the patrol car and aimed it at the two policemen. But one of the gunmen spoke , nervously in Italian to Giofre and i then talked to Johnson, trying to persuade him not to shoot. Johnson, a 6-footer about 30 years old. lowered the riot gun. Giofre said later “I owe my life to that Italian fellow.” Set up Roadblocks Giofre said the men. armed with their own weapons plus the guns taken from the patrol car, fled in a 1955 or 1956 hardtop convertible with Michigan license plates. They headed toward St. Louis, just a few miles west of here. Giofre managed to reach handI cuff keys in his pocket, removed the handcuffs and ran to the police car which had been left 100 feet from the tree. A radioed alarm established roadblocks in the area without success. Neither officer could explain i why the men wanted, to find a j hydro-electric plant. They specu- ! lated, however, the men might j have buried something, possibly robbery loot, and had used the plant as a marker. There have been no major robberies in the Collinsville area recently. They could offer no good description ofc the men because of the poor visibility. • More than 4.500,000 persons live in Boston’s 40-mile metropolitan area. ■ --- , ' Three species of shrews are I found in Texas. . Notre Dame And Bradley Upset Saturday Night By JOHN GRIFFIN United Press Sports Writer What happened to Bradley and Notre Dame in the weekend's big basketball upsets could happen this week to North Carolina and Kansas when the nation’s top two teams run into some mighty rough competition. Bradley, last year’s National Invitation Tournament champion rated No. 4 in the nation this season. was handed its first defeat. 82-76, by visiting Seattle Saturday, when All-America hopeful Elgin Baylor scored 26 points. Notre Dame, ranked No. 10 and hailed as the Midwest’s top independent team, bowed to previously winless Marquette, 78-64, in perhaps an even bigger surprise. What more warning could national champion North Carolina have as it prepares to extend its : winning streak, which now stands lat 36 games after a 70-58 romp iover South Carolina? Coach Frank McGuire’s Tar Heels will have to I prove their right to rank No. 1 when they face Minnesota Friday night in the first round of the University of Kentucky Invitational Tournament at Lexington, Ky. That could be the end of the Tar Heel streak right there, but if they win they might have to face Kentucky, die nation's No. 3 team, ,in the final Saturday night. And that could be one of the season’s top games. Kansas now has won five straight this season, including Saturday’s 66-54 victory over St. Joseph’s (Pa.). Jayhawk 7-f oo te r Wilt Chamberlain was appearing before his “home folks’* in Philadelphia and came through for them with 31 points as he sank 11 of 15 field goal shots, and added 22 rebounds. But Kansas will be tested Friday by 20th-ranked | Washington and Saturday by Cali(fornia, defending Pacific Coast Conference champion. i Bradley and Notre Dame were the only members of the nation’s top 10 to lose on Saturday, sixthranked Kansas State drubbed lowa, 86-69, as Jack Parr scored 25 points; seventh-ranked Michi-

gan State routed Colorado, 84-44; eighth-ranked Temple trounced Bucknell, 75-58; and ninth-ranked UCLA crushed De Pauw, 73-48.

Lions, Frisco . ' I To Play Sunday For West Title By EARL WRIGHT United Press Sports Writer The San Francisco Forty-Niners, surprise team of the National Football Leagues richest season, are three-point favorites to win more gold next Sunday by whippint the visiting Detrqjt Lions in a playoff game for the Western Division title. The winner will play host to coach Paul Brown's Cleveland Browns, Eastern Division champions, in the title game Dec. 29. Detroit and San Francisco forced the first playoff game since 1952 when they rallied to win their final regular season games Sunday. The crippled Lions trailed the Bears, 10-0 at the half in Chicago but rebounded behind quarterback Tobin Rote to win, 21-13. Three hours later at San Franeisco, injured quarterback Y.A. Tittle hobbled onto a muddy field in the third quarter and sparked a FortyNiner rally that erased a 20-10 Green Bay Packer lead and produced a 27-20 The Baltimore Colts started the day tied for first with Detroit and San Francisco but bowed out of the closest division race in league history by dropping a 37-21 decision to the Rams at Los Angeles. Norm Van Brocklin ended Baltimore’s dream of its first title by throwing four touchdown passes in the rain. Cleveland clinched Eastern honors Dec. 7 when the Pittsburgh Steelers upset the New York Giants. But the Browns appeared set on proving they would have won without any help as they came from behind twice at Yankee Stadium to edge the Giants, defending league and Eastern champioris, 34-28. In Sunday’s other game, Sam Baker scored all the points in leading the Redskins to a 10-3 victory over the Steelers at Washington. In a Saturday game, the Chicago Cardinals edged the Eagles at Philadelphia, 31-27.
