SHERIFF MERLE AFFOLDER is shown above receiving one of the two new county-owned sheriff's cars from Harry Schwartz, of Schwartz Ford Company. State law now requires a county to own its sheriff’s department cars. The two men who are on duty from the department at any time will use the cars, sheriff Affolder explained. The car shown above is plainly marked, but the other car will be kept unmarked to help detect violators.—-(Staff Photo)

Legora Markle, Gloria Koenemann, Sally McCullough, Alice Kukelhan, and Marvine Schaefer gave their reports on the national Farm Bureau convention at the Hotel Sherman in Chicago this week. This was the . first time any Adams county rural youthers ever attended a national convention. Alan Miller suggested that a collection be taken for«the WOWO "Penny Pitch." United Nations In Marathon Session Communists Force Long U.N. Session united Nations, n.y. <up> —The Soviet union and its Communist cohorts forced the United Nations into marathon session on “peaceful coexistence” today in an apparent effort to offset the opening ofthe NATO conference in Paris. The general assembly’s main political committee stayed in session until 2:16 a.m. est and when it adjourned for eight hours there still were 12 speakers left on the list. Every one of the Communist bloc delegations gave long speeches, prompting one Western delegate to call it "a sort of a filibuster." ' The United Natons was racing toward adjournment tonight but another matter that threatened to extend the session was the possibility of renewed debate on Communist Hungary. Uruguay’s Enrique Rodogue,a Fabregat, a member of fivenation special ’ commission that turned in a scatching indictment of Russia’s suppression of the 1956 Hungarian revolt, sought U.N. action to save revolutionary Gen. Pal Maleter and two other Freedom Fighters from death. Maleter, popular hero of s the revolt; Gen. Istvan Kovacs, and Sandor Kopacai, former Budapest police chief, were said in reports heard here to be on trial for their lives now. Fabregat asked the help of the 20-nation Latin-American group and sought the aid of the United States in deciding the best course to help die Hungarian heroes. The assembly's main political committee was dealing with its last item on the agenda — Russia's perennial demand for a "peaceful coexistence” declaration by all the world’s countries.
