MRS. CLARA BALL OBSERVES EIGHTY-SIXTH BIRTHDAY Mrs. Clara Ball, of Peterson, was pleasantly surprised Wednesday when a number of her friends and neighbors stopped by her home to help her celebrate her eighty-sixth birthday anniversary. A potluck dinner was served •t the noon hour, from a large tale covered with a red cloth, and centered with a small Christmas tree and candles. The honored guest received many cards and gifts for the occasion. Present were Mrs. Henry Brelner, Mrs. Frank Spade, Mrs. William Ehrman, Mrs. Doriha Shady, Mrs. Reuben Smith, Mrs. Glen Straub, Mrs. Robert Weber, Mrs. Harry Bauer, Mrs. Milton Hoffman, Mrs. Lena Sherlock and Mrs. Opal August. Mrs. Ball will soon leave for Fort Wayne, where she will spend the winter visiting with a dauhgter, Opal. Her address will be 1524 East Wayne street. Each room of the Spangler home was gaily decorated in keeping with the yuletide season. Following the dinner. Master Joe Geimer, as Santa Claus, arrived and distributed gifts. A collection was also gathered for the Goodfellows club. Mrs. Hubert Feasel, president, then conducted a brief business session. After the minutes of the last meeting and the treasurer's report, plans were discussed concerning the Christmas party for Girl Scout troop 5, sponsored by the club. It was then announced that volunteers will be needed for various activities of the club planned for the near future. A report was given oy Miss Joan Wemhoff of the meeting with the Fort Wayne dub, which several Decatur BPW members recently attended. Holiday games were then played by the group, with prizes being won by Mrs. John Rosier, Mrs. Kenneth Beard and Miss Glennys Roop. This was followed by the singing of a medley of favorite Christmas carols. Tiny china bells and Christmas candle favors decorated the trays from which dessert was then served to the members. Officers who served on the Christmas committee for the evening included Mrs. Feasel, Mrs.
Francis N. Howard, Mrs. Nelson Doty, Mrs. Joe Kelly. Miss Rheta Butcher and Miss Barbara Bowman. LINCOLN SCHOOL STUDENTS PRESENT MUSICAL PROGRAM Students, of the Lincoln school presented a musical Christmas program Thursday evening, for approximately 550 parents, relatives and friends, who attended the Christmas Parent - Teacher meeting, held in the school auditorium. First on the program was a song story, "The Shoemaker and the Elves," presented by the children on grades 2A, 2B and 2C. Miss Janalee Smith, of the Decatur high school band, directed the junior band is playing. “Christmas Eve," and "Rudolph, the Red Nqjse Reindeer." The audience then joined in singing as the band played another chorus of the latter song. Miss Helen Haubold, director of music in the Decatur public schools, led the seventh grade choir in a group of Christmas numbers, including "Deck the Halls,” "Winter Wonderland,’’ "Away in a Manager,” "Jingle Bells,” and "Silent Night.” As the choir softly hummed “Silent Night,” Miss Rita Norquest was featured in an impressive violin solo. Following a few words of appreciation by Judge Myles F. Parrish, association president, the hospitality committee served refreshments. Cookies for the occasion were prepared by the various ‘room mothers. MRS. STUART BRIGHTWELL IS HOSTESS FOR MEETING Mrs. Stuart Brightwell was recently hostess for a regular monthly meeting of the Baptist Women’s Missionary association of the First Baptist church. The president, Mrs. Bryce Dan- ' iels, called the meeting to order, after which Mrs. Brightwell presented inspirational Christmas devotions. Her subject illustrated worshipping Christ as an infant, as well as Lord and King., This portion of the meeting was closed with prayer, after which 17 members answered roll call. One guest also attended the meeting. A special Christmas offering was taken so rthe Rev. and Mrs. Ivan Augsburger, missionaries in the Dominican Republic. Election of officers followed, with Mrs. Warren Lehman elected president, and Mrs. Noble Reynolds elected secretary. These two officers will be installed during the January meeting. Other officer® of the association are retained for the coming year. The remainder of the evening was spent playing holiday games and contests, followed by a gift exchange. NORTHWEST PTA HAS OPEN HOUSE FOLLOWING PROGRAM A large group of parents, relatives, friends and children attended the Northwest elementary Parent - Teachers association meeting held Thursday evening in the school auditorium. Mrs. Arthur Beeler, vice-presi-dent of the organization, conducted the business meeting, which was opened by a devotional lesson, presented by Mrs. Ben Eichenauer, assisted by Mrs. Oral Fulton. Children of the school then presented a delightful program of Christmas carols and verse. The program included the Northwest junior band playing several appropriate Christmas selections, under the direction of Jack Dailey. Clint Reed, regular director of the band, was unable to attend the performance. Several Spanish songs were presented by the children of grade 6 D, followed by a chotal reading, "Meaning of Christmas,” which was given by grade 5D students. Grade 4D students gave "The Shoe Children of Today,” after which the students of grades 3D and 3E presented the "Friendly Beasts.” An exercise, "Merry Christmas Letters," was then given by children of grade 2D, and the program was closed as the children of grades ID and IE sang "Away in the Manger,” and "Our Lord's Prayer." Following the program, the parents, relatives and guests were invited to tour the school and visit the various classrooms to meet with the children’s instructors. Refreshments were then served by the hospitality committee of the association. Arrangements for the program were made by the teachers of each grade. METHODIST WBCS GIVES PROGRAM FOR SHUT-INS Members of the Methodist church Women's Society of Christtian Service met at the church Thursday, for an all-day meeting, during which they presented a Christmas program for shut-ins of the church. The various circles of the church met in regular sessions prior to the noon luncheon, which was served by circle four. Appropriate Christmas decorations were used on each of the serving tables. Shut-in guests present at the meeting were Mrs. Elizabeth Ruckman, Mrs. Homer Gauze, Mrs. Melissa Werst and Mrs’ Agnes Andrews. Following the general meeting at Ip.m., Mrs. Dan Tyndall directed a musical program for the guests. The Christmas story was told in song, with solos by Mrs Walter Krick and Mrs. Tyndall, toe organ-. Ist, and Mrs. Tyndall narrated toe program. The worship service was led by Mrs. W. Guy Brown.. Members of the Bethany Builders class of the Bethany E. U B church will have their Christmas dinner at the church Tuesday evening, at 6 o’clock. A carry-in supper will be served at 6 p. m. net Thursday, for members of tee Do Your Best class of the Trinity E. U. B. church. This will be the regular Christmas party, and will be held in the church basement. The newly organized Sunday school study class of Mrs. R. O. Wynn, of the Trinity E. U. B. church, will meet at the church next Tuesday, at 6:15 p. m., for a carry-in dinner and Christmas party. Mrs. Victor Hamrick will he hostess for a meeting of the St.j Catherine discussion club, Tuesday evening at 8 o’clock. The late Gen. George S. Patton Jr. was the first American to compete in the Olympic pentathlon. As a lieutenant, he entered the 1912 Olympics without any special preparation and finished third.

Miss Jackie Sue Baker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Baker, of Bellmont Road, is among the Decatur residents celebrating birthdays on this Friday the 13th. Dr. Myron Wicke, of Nashville, Tenn., was the principal speaker. Mrs. Anna Eberhardt, of Indianapolis, has returned to her home, after spending the past two weeks visiting with Mrs. Bertha Heuer. Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Brant, of Lake Wawasee, former residents of this city, will spend the Christmas holidays visiting with friends and relatives in Florida. They will be located at 1220 North “E” street, Lake Worth, Florida. Christmas Party Os Central Soya Co's. Employes On Monday The 15th annual Christmas party for Central Soya employes and their families will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at the Decatur high school gym according to an announcement made today, by Laures Meyer, president of the em- ■ ployes’ recreation association. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Myer, general cnalrman of the party which is sponsored jointly by the company and the association, stated that a special program of entertainment has been planned. Highlight of the program will be the appearance of Santa Claus with gifts for those attending. • The gym will be decorated for the occasion by a committee with Mrs. George Alton in charge. Don Mac Lean, Jr., will serve as master of ceremonies for the evening. Organ music will be presented from 6:30 to 7 p.m. and during the distribution of gifts by Mrs. Robert Houk.
