May Restore Phil Dickens As I.U. Coach CHICAGO (UP) - The Big Ten may decide today whether to reinstate Indiana football Coach Phil Dickens. Dickens was suspended for one year last July 28 for violation of the conference rule requiring that all aid to athletes be based on their demonstrated need. However, Indiana was given permission to ask for his reinstatement at the annual winter conference meeting, and the Hoosier application was expected to be one of the first items of business for the faculty representatives, who began their meeting today. It was expected that Dickens

would be reiMtatedl » ’..4 Attempts to prepare the 1961-62 football schedule were stalemated after a day of discussion by the insistence of some schools on holding the first two dates open for non - conference opponents and some difficulty in arranging home and home games. "Three or four” schools had seven game programs set for 1961, Commissioner Kenneth L. Wilson said, but he said there was still a problem on the sites, even for these schools. Football coaches and athletic directors failed in an earlier attempt, in May, to arrange the schedules. No action was expected on proposals to amend the rule on aid to athletes until Friday. Officials said that lowa’s proposal to eliminate need as a factor in aid would be the first subject on the agenda for changing the rule and that probably no discussion of the suggestion would come until Friday. Flam, Seixas Win Over Belgian Duo BRISBANE, Australia (UP) — Jittery Herb Flam, who turned Tiger in the face of defeat, and poised Vic Seixas, who ignored the taunts of the crowd, scored wins today that virtually put the United States into the Davis Cup challenge round against Australia. Singles victories by the two Americans in man-killing 100-de-gree heat at Milton Courts gave the United States an almost unbeatable 2-0 w ovex Bflgiujn in the interzone cup finals. * Flam, brooding and nervous for the last two weeks, forgot his cares and rallied to beat Belgium's Jacques Brichant, in a 6-3, 4-6, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 battle that lasted one hour and 12 minutes and broke the Belgians’ hearts. Seixas did it the easy way, overwhelming 33-year-old Philippe Washer, 6-0, 6-3, 6-4, in the last of today’s two matches. Now all the United States needs is a doubles victory Friday by Seixas and Gardnar Mu 11 o y against Brichant and Washer to clinch this series and with it a berth in the challenge round against cup - holding Australia at Melbourne, Dec. 26-28. . Even if they lose this doubles test, the Yanks still Would need to win only one of the, concluding pair of singles matches on Saturday.

Daugherty Refuses Texas Aggies Job EAST LANSING, Mich., «B — Michigan State's Duffy Daugherty will return this weekend in • much better baragining position than when he left Sunaay on ■ croescountry meeting and speaking swing and turned down “a lot of money” in a coaching offer from Texas A & M. John A. Hannah. MSV president, wouldn't say Daugherty will get a pay raise next year- But neither would he say that Daugherty wouldn’t get a pay boost. “Just say the matter hasn’t been discussed up to now,” he said. But there was no doubt that Daughterly gained eonsiderable seature in his home state by turning down the Aggies* tempting offer because "I couldn’t go .down there and leave half of myself back here.” The amiable Irishman, whose teams have finished second twice in the Big Ten and won the Rose Bowl once in his four years as Spartan coach, was offered the job Monday after he appeared at • meeting of the Texas A&M Quarterback Club in Houston. The job was left vacant when Pal “Bear” Bryant was released from his contract to accept the coaching job at Alabama. There were reports Daugherty was offered a long-term contract and $60,000 to take the Aggies’ job —about three times his earnings at Michigan State. H. S. Basketball Monroeville 56, New Haven 45.
