Mayor Robert F Wagner conferred throughout Wednesday with his transit commissioners, business leaders, Gov. Averell Harriman and newspaper publishers. He said he hadn’t “myelf heard of any formula that could result in a settlement of the strike.” Transit Commissioner Joseph E. O’Grady refused again to consider yielding to the MBA’s demand that the authority change its ruling that one union must be selected to bargain for all subway employes. The strike, combined with the weather which went from rain to freeze today, has been a heavy blow to pre - Christmas business in the city. The heads of two major department stores, Macy’s and Gimbels, rode the subway at noon Wednesday in an effort to demonstrate that customers could reach downtown stores. The transit Authority said the subway system was losing $400,000 a day—s2so,ooo in fares and $150,000 in bonuses, meals and other benefits being paid 'to “loyal” workers. The Tares apparently represented the 15-cent tokens of about 1,700,000 missing riders who either took to the surface or stayed home: STEVENSON iied’ from Page psia’s Sputnik and economic warfare; His opinion, expressed to Dulles, is that the “Hottest war right now is the cold 4var.” He believes there is lack,of imagination, Thitiative and action in Washington today. Temperature Near Zero In Indiana Heavy Snow Blanket Across Northlands By UNITED PRESS Temperatures plunged near zero in Indiana today for the second morning in a row and a blanket of snow as much as eight inches deep lay heavy across the northlands. The mercury didn’t have far to fall to reach lows ranging from 3 above zero at Lafayette, 4 at Indianapolis, 5 at Terre Haute and 6 at Fort Wayne. For it climbed no higher than a few degrees above zero Wednesday over most of the state. The weather bureau reported eight inches of snow on the ground at South Bend this morning, deposited Tuesday and Wednesday as the brunt of a snowstorm from the northwest concentrated on a relatively small area around the southern tip of Lake Michigan. Forecasts called for the cold Wave to abate today after a two day visit. The warmup already was being felt in the extreme north portion, where South Bend’s overnight low was 11 while areas farther south, including Evansville with 9, had colder readings. Highs in the 20s were due today with lows tonight ranging from 12 north to 18 south. A further moderation will occur Friday with highs ranging from 34 to 36, and the outlook for Saturday was even warmer. Mostly sunny weather was due today and tonight with partly cloudy Friday and Saturday.
