Yellow Jackets Whip Portland Panthers By 64-53 Score Tuesday

The Decatur Yellow Jackets climbed over the .500 mark Tuesday night, defeating the Portland Panthers, 64-53, at the Decatur high school gym. It was the Jackets' fourth victory of the season as compared to three defeats. The Panthers held the lead only twice in the ball game, both early in the contest, and at one time the Jackets boasted a big 24-point cushion late in the third quarter. Portland drew first blood as Ed McKinley broke under for an easy layup. A free throw by Bob Banks and Bob Shraluka's first of five field goals put Decatur on top at 3-2.’ Jerry Pyle hit his only fielder of the game for a 4-3 Portland advantage after three minutes of play, the last time the Panthers were in front. The Yellow Jackets then quickly.built their advantage to 11-6, and were on top by eight points, 15-1, at the end of the quar- / Decatur was limited* to nine points, six by Banks; jpi the sec--pnd quarter, and the Jay county quintet trimmed the Jackets’ margin to only five points, 24-19, at the half. £• The Jackets started to roll after the intermission, and poured in 14 straight points before MeKinley registered Portland's first point of the third period after four minutes, and Decatur held a 38-20 bulge. Mike Conway hit the Panthers’ only field goal of the quarter after Decatur had upped its lead to 45-21 with two minutes to play. The Jackets were on top at the end of the third quarter, 45-26, and only a .late desperate flurry by Jerry Stansbury eut Decatur’s final margin to 11 points, as the Portland center hit 15 points in the closing stanza. Three players did the bulk of the Decatur scoring. Bob Shraluka had 18 points, Larry Moses 17 and Bob Banks 15. Stansbury had 20 for Portland, and Dick Elmore was the only other Panther in double figures, netting 12..
