It is significant that a lesson on joy should be written by an apostle in prison. Under the shadow of impending death. Paul stresses the fact that we should rejoice as a matter of principle. Every Christian must discover for himself the joy that can come from a true Christian experience V. 1. "Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for. my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved.” Paul expresses his longing to see again the Philippian Christians and calls upon them to remain faithful, even in the face of adversity, that they may win the crown of life. .. Vs. 2. 3, "I beseech in Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord. . And I entreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other f my fellow-labourers, whose names . i il " i : — RIVERSIDE GARAGE We Repair AU Makes of Cara Front Wheel Alignment Batteries and Tires 24-Hour Wrecking Service 126 E. i are in the book of life." Paul urges that petty quarrels and prejudie- ' es be forgotten for the sake of ’ harmony. Since the two womenhad and could contribute much to the welfare of the church if they ceased their bickering,he urged some unknown third person to try to effect a reconciliation. Vs. 4,5, 8. "Rejoice in the Lord alway; and again I say, Rejoice . . . Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand ... Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God." Paul says whatever may be our fortunes in life, a reason for rejoicing will always be ours if we have a right relationship with God. Moderation implies a forbearance. a reasonableness resulting in our not insisting on always having our own way. History has , proven that there is great power in forbearance which boasting bullies have found to be utterly devastating. Be careful about nothing means to have no anxiety about anything, but through prayer to ask God s guidance and strength to meet our difficulties. V. 7. "And the peace of God, which passeth ail understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” It is imposstble to understand or estimate the peace of mind that comes to us through a right relationship with God. V. 6. “Finally, brethren, whatsoever, things are true, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things things are honest, whatsoever are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue. and if there be any praise, think on these things." In this verse, Paul gives us a set of principles as a basis for Christian conduct. Truth, honor, fairness, purity. whatever things good men consider of good report or well spoken, of, are the moral standards by which a Christian should judge his own conduct. '‘Those have both learned and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: i and the God of peace shall be with you." Paul had lived so uprightly himself'thSt he dared to set himself as an example of one who had tried his best to follow Christ in spite of persecution of all kinds. Vs. 10, 11. "But I rejoice in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again: wherein ye were also careful ye lacked opportunity. . , Not that I speak in respect of want; for , I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.” The Philippian Christians were thoughtful of Paul afid sent him gifts when it was possible, and he appreciated their thoughtfulness. Paul had learned to adjust himself, to any circumstances, and his personal comfort was of little concern to him. His one desire was to pbrsue the work given him to FIRST BAPTIST 221 South Fourth Street Stuart H. Brightwell, pastor 9:15 a.m., Sunday school hour. Lester Mitchel, supt.
