Admits Strangling 14-Year-Old Girl Confession Is Modi ' By Chicago Youth CHICAGO <V) — A teen-age boy has told how. .primed with vodka and orange juice, he strangled a 14-year-old girl in a Lovers' Lane, then dumped her body in a pond, police said today. Robert M. Fleig. 17, said he kiled Mary Lou Wagner Friday night when she resisted his advance and threatened to tell their parents.' police said. The young girt’s bodywas found Monday night floating in a pond west of Northfield, 11l Fleig, who had been questioned twice earlier in connection with Mary Lou's disappearance, broke down and confessed to the slaying mihutes before he was to take a voluntary lie detector test. Rogers Park Police Capt. Ralph Petacque said Fleig told him earlier that he and a companion, Robert O’Dowd, 22, had spent Friday night together drinking vodka and orange juice. Fleig said O'Dowd loaned him his car in which he kept a date with the Sullivan high school freshman, then drove her home He revised his story Monday night, recounting how he drove to a “Lovers Lane” on Willow Road beyond the city limits and made improper advances, Petacque said. The Wagner girl resisted him. Fleig said, and threatened to tell “my mother and your mother.” Fleig, the son of a bakery owner, lives about 12 blocks from the Wagners. __'X - ' After beating and choking her. Fleig said, he carried her partially disrobed body to a pond near the Glenview Naval Air Station and tumbled it into the water, according to police. CONGRESSIONAL (Continued from Page One) Chiefs of Staff, and Secretary of Commerce Sinclair Weeks were among others present. They rose and applauded when Eisenhower entered the room for the start of the meeting. Would Swap Information Administration sources had said in advance that the President and his “team” would outline to the congressional leaders a 39-40-billion-dollar defense budget, including more money for missiles, and a foreign aid request for next year of around four billion dollars, half a billion mote than this year. In seeking an exchange of atomic information with U.S. Allies, the president is not asking congressional authority tp. .give. nuclqar weapons to other countries.. But he' wants to s'wap information on such things "as design, manufacture and composition of < such weapons. Present law, enacted in 1946. has. for instance, kept British and U.S. atomic scientists from pooling their discoveries. Authorities believe this has kept projects of both countries from developing as rapidlv as they might have. Tax Cut Doubtful Martin predicted in advance of today's meeting that overall government spending for the fiscal year starting next July 1 will run i ahead oL this year's peacetime l record of ’about 72 billion dollars
as a result es higher defense spending Martin and Rayburn agreed a defense budget increase is almost certain and that as a consequence hopes for a tax cut next year are about dead. Trade-ins Os Homes New Market Trend New Development In Real Estate Market F 1 i — "nF— Editor’s Note: The United Press surveyed 15 cities across the nation to get a picture of prices and sales of homes at the end of 1957. By UNITED PRESS Trade-ins of “used” houses on brand new models is one of the most striking new developments in the American real estate market. The system works much like trade-ins of used cars. The house builder takes the old homestead in partial payment on the new—and usually gives a credit well above that the homeowner could get in cash in the open market. Then the builder must dispose of the old house, perhaps at a loss but not enough to eliminate his overall profit. Columbus, Ohio, reports as much as one-sixth of its sales of new homes now done through trade-ins. Dallas also reports the practice growing swiftly. J It is a manifestation, for one : thing, of the increasing difficulty ■ during the past yepr pf getting mortgage money from banks and . other loan outfits. That situation seems to be easing now. just as ' real estate people in many sections of the United States were becoming concerned about a serious slumpA 15-city survey showed these general developments during 1957; 1. Houses 20 years old or more took a slump in sale price in the majority of areas. 2. Sale price of homes around 5 years old held their own. 3. The new house picture was spotty, up in some places and down in others with shortage of mortgage money the main reason for slow sales. 4. Interest on mortgages rose as high as 6 per cent compared with an average of per cent a few years ago. BENSON (Continued from Page Ona) mgton with only one purpose—“to do the best possible job I could for farmers/' He then listed these points which the administration i stands for; —Freedom to plant. J —Freedom for farmers to make their own management decisions. —Getting rid of every undesirable control and taking the shackles off farmers’ efficiency. —Building farm markets at , home and abroad. —Getting food into stomachs inj stead pl storage-— —Helping all farmers to help ' themselves — especially those on i smaller farms. i —“Using our ability to produce abundance for the Messing it | really is.” !
