Bank Robbers Make $120,000 Stale Haul Most Loot Missing i Despite Solutions INDIANAPOLIS (UP> — India--Ina bank robbers havb made a $120,000 haul in the first 11 months jof 1957, and despite the fact six of the eight holdups have been solved more than 80 per, cent of the loot still is missing. Numerically speaking, this has been a bad year for the men who scoop the cash from the teller ■ drawers and vaults of Hoosier banks. “Lone wolf” bandits were caught quickly and confessed to five of the eight holdups, and a prime suspect was charged with a sixth. Yet only about SIB,OOO was recovered. the records show. Christopher L. Magee, 40. Chicago, was the latest alleged bandit to be caught in the snares of relentless law enforcement authorities. He was arrested only last week and charged with the $46.000 holdup of a South Bend bank Hast Jan. 15. Indiana's first such ; holdup of 1957Second Biggest Haul But Magee issued no confession and he didn’t lead police to any I well-hidden cache of cash. That $46,000 loot was the second ■ biggest haul of the year in Hoosierland The biggest was at Fort Wayne, where three men got $50,104 only six weeks ago and : vanished. George Stults Bags Deer In Pennsylvania ' George Stults, one of five Decatur men on a deer-hunting trip to Pennsylvania, called Monday night to report he had shot his deer yesterday. Other members of the party had not obtained their game when Stults called his wife. ally, has not been recovered. Likewise, the three men who robbed a Mount Summit bank of $6,000 Nov. 18 escaped capture thus far in the state's most recent bank holdup. Otfterwise/'the story was* a different one. Five other bank robbers were caught almost immediately. some of them within minutes of their crimes, and not only was their loot recovered but they are behind prison walls today. Only last week. Adolphus Abrams, 49, Indianapolis, drew a 10-year prison term for the $4,137 holdup of a Mooresville bank Nov. 7. He was arrested 14 minutes after the holdup. Other bandits were caught and punished for holdups at Patoka. Sellersburg, Sweetser and Crandall The most sensational holdup of the year involved little money — only $1,655 stolen from the Sellersburg State Bank. But it made headlines all over the land. • William Hassett, 25, Louisville, the bandit, made the mistake of killing State Policeman Melvin Walts. 49, when Walts stopped him at a blockade. In revenge, and to save his own life, the Rev. Robert W. Gingery, a New Albany Methodist minister, shot Hassett dead with the fallen trooper's riot gun.
