If we are the great nation which we’ve always boasted, we'll admit the Russians pulled a fast one on us by launching the first satellite and then we’ll buckle down and face the facts and start immediately to remedy matters. If some of the leaders want to diUy and dally, let's make sure that these leaders won’t be around after the next general election. -—o—o— — The next session of Congress which will convene shortly after the first of the year should be a hum-dinger with lots of fireworks. President Eisenhower, no doubt will come in for a lot of ehiding because Russia has gained the upper hand in scientific exploits. Let's all continue to have faith in America. While defense is most important, we should not overlook the fact that we are a peaceful nation and it will be far better to proceed with a view to permanent peace and scientific advances along this line. ■ « o- o ft won't be too long now until a basketball-mad Indiana will settle down to figuring out the state high school champ. Time flies, because just a few weeks ago we were cheering our favorite high school football team to victory. Now it's basketball and

already students at both high schools are talking about the Junior Proms and before we know it. Spring will be here. ——o—o Industrial employment has shown a slight gain in Decatur compared with last month but we're still 200 behind compared with a year ago, Chamber of Commerce statistics reveal. The payroll is only off about 36,000 compared with last year. This is not good until you start comparing averages in comparable cities of northern Indiana. You will then discover that Decatur is in better shape than most cities. We hope that these figures will be much more favorable as the weeks go on, and we have every reason to believe they will. o -O ' ' ■■ Careful driving is very important in the winter time too. There are probably just as many avoidable mishaps during the cold months as in the summer, when compared with the number of* miles travelled. On many occas sions windshields are harder to see out of, and just a wee bit of ice can cause a tragic accident. Your best bet is to drive cautiously all the time and remember the other fellow may be a little careless. Let's make the highways safe for every motorist.

However, there seem to be a few people in our town who are perfect. Mr. Death has given 10 years of faithful service to our community. He has given 40 hours a week to protect our town. Still, his free time is not his own. But, as stated previously, there are people in our town who are perfect. They don't believe in mistakes. They never have made any. Why should anyone else? Christ doesn't judge us until we are dead. Why should man? Yours Truly, ' Tom Allen. 110 S. First St. Decatur, Ind. ' ' mi 20 Years Ago Today , November 30, 1937—Walter J.
