Jewish titles and prerogatives, at good birth, well educated under the great Gamaliel ,of the favored tribe of Benjamin. He had even gone further than the law demanded in persecuting the Christians I until he saw the error of his think- I ing. and was regarded as a model Jew in his devotion to the law. ; Vs. 7, 8 But' what things were -. gain to me. those I counted loss for Christ. . . Yea doubtless, and ’ I count on all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung that I may win Christ.” Paul had given up material wealth, honors, a life of comfort and ease, even home ties, for the sake of j Christ, and regards them as unimportant Paul’s knowledge of Christ was not merely intellectual, but consisted also of a fellowship with Christ that was satisfying and real, and which made everything he had previously had seem trivial and unimportant. Vs. 9. 10, 11. "And be found in Adams and the anw him, not having mine own righteousness. which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which isr of God by faith: That I may know him, and-the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; ... If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead ” To Paul, true righteousness was not a matter of obedience to the law, but man's yielding to God through Christ, allowing the divine power to remold his nature. Paul considers knowledge of Christ that which comes only through fellowship with him, identifying himself with Christ’s sufferings, gaining the power that comes to those who merge their lives with Christ, anticipating the life that is beyond death. V. 12. “Not as though I had already attained, either ware already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehened that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus/’ God calls us to greater and' better things each dayw that no one attains perfection, for the farther we go on the way, the farther we know the way leads. “He who knows most is that one who knows how much he has yet to learn.” The upward call of God is insistent and leads us to want to attain perfection, which is actually a full, mature, spiritual stature. Paul is humble in his realization that he has not attained perfection nor fully grasped the meaning and power of Christ, though he is aiming to reach that point. Vs. 13, 14. “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: "but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” Concentration on the goal ahead made it possible for Paul to forget anything in the past that would hinder his progress toward reaching his goal of everlasting lifS Paul put out of his mind what was past and reached forth only to those things that were ahead. Vs. 20, 21. “For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: . . . , who shall change our vile body, that it ftiay be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue unto himself/’ In refer•ing to “conversation” Paul meant “community" or "commonwealth.” He thought of himself as a citizen of heaven and he seeks to be worthy of that citizenship rather than concerned with the
