Mary Martin One Os , Top Paid TV Stars Appearing Only In Long Extravaganzas By VERNON SCOTT United Press Hollywood Writer HOLLYWOOD <UP> — Tending contender for title of television's first lady is Mary Martin, the will-o’-the-wisp cutie who appears* only in two-hour extravaganzas. A flop in movies, Mary is probably the highest paid performer in TV. She was seen by an astonishing 100 million persons in her two performances of “Peter Pan.” Wednesday night the diminutive actress stars in “Annie Get Your Gun,” another blockbuster, and the first legitimate $1 million show in video annals. Mary’s TV success is all the more amazing in view of her failure in movies She laid a whole carton of eggs on the screen, the last of which was an ostrichsized beauty titled “True To Life” at Paramount in 1942. A Hit On TV “It’s still a mystery to me why I’ve been so well accepted cm TV," Mary said during a rehearsal break. She was togged in beige sweater and slacks. Curled up in a chair, the impish expression in her shoe-button eyes, and closecropped hair gave the impression that she was rehearsing again for Peter Pan. “I always loathed movies. Couldn't stand to see myself on

the screen. But television is perfect. I’ve found the formula for doing a TV show that can’t miss. "Before a play or musical is televised it should travel around tlje country as a road show. I’ll never do a TV program any other way. It gives everyone an opportunity to know exactly what they're doing.” Mary took "Peter Pan" on the road the year before last- This year she toured with "Annie” for several months before beginning rehearsals for TV. Six Stages Needed “Every Broadway play has tryouts in New Haven or Boston," she piped. “So why not do the same with television spectaculars.” NBC-TV expects an audience of some 70 million for “Annie.” The show has taken over three color studios, a hallway and the carpenter's shop at the network’s gigantic Burbank plant. Altogether six stages will be utilized to accommodate the cast of 60. If a million bucks sounds out of line for a two-hour TV show, consider that a small item like five trees in the scenery cost SSOO each. Then there’s a 30-piece orchestra, 25 pounds of makeup, 56,000 pounds of wood, canvas and steel for sets, 333 costumes weighing over a ton, three horses (one an understudy) and a treadmill far the horses, 1000 rounds of ammunition for rehearsal and show, 80 assorted guns, a million watts of power to light the show, etc. Add to this salaries of cast and crew and you begin to get the idea. "I’ve never done anything small or simple on television,” Mary concluded. “But this is the biggest one of all.”
Tart Cherry Sauce Tops Dessert Sweets If we say “cherries” and you think of "pie”, you’d score onehundred percent But we’d give you an extra geld star if you thought of pound cake, bavarian cream, custard or ice cream with cherry topping. That gold star would be for knowing that canned tart red cherries blended into a smooth sauce can add the “spice and everything nice” to a humdrum week-night dessert for the family, or the ■park of glamour to a snack for unexpected company. A special favorite with company is both inexpensive and easy to make. Just layer the tart red cherry sauce between layers of thick vanilla pudding into tall parfait glasses. Top with more of the cherries. As for the sauce, it’s made by simply adding sugar and comstorch to the cherry liquid from a pound can of water-pack cherries in a saucepan, heating, then combined with cherries and a spoonful of brandy flavoring. The sauce can be stored in the refrigerator for weeks If it douds over, due to the thickening agent, simply heat and it’s ready to NMW •M® and dear.
