• COMMODORES The Decatur Commodores got back on the winning trapk Friday night, whipping the Willshire, 0. Bearcsfty.V9- M i at the Decatur gym. It was the third win in four starts for the Commodores. It was a nip and tuck affair for the first nine minutes of play, but the Decatur boys then broke the game open and had the contest well in hand the rest of the way. The struggle was tied four times during the first quarter, at 2-2, 4-4, 64, and 8-8, and R. James then hit to give Wiltshire the lead for the first time at 104 with 3:15 to play. Dale Hake made good on a three-point play for an 11-10 Commodore lead, but Garver's bucket made it 12-11, with the Ohio lads on top. Rapid-fire fielders by Hake, Phil Reed and Glen Wilder, plus Joe Kohne's free throw, put the Commordes in front, 16-12, but the Bearcats cut this lead to two points, 16-16, at the end of the first quarter. Reed and August traded twopointers. and then the Commodores began to roU. Hake contributed another three-point play. Wilder dropped in a pair of charity shots, Tom Meyer hit two from the foul line and added a field goal, and Decatur was well in front, 31-16, in less than three minutes. The Commodores took a substantial 41-25 bulge to the dressing room at the half. Willshire never made a serious threat in the last two periods, with the Commodores at times leading by 20 points and holding a 62-44 margin at the end of the third quarter. Meyer topped all the scores with 21 points, while three other Commodores were in double figures, Wilder with 16, Reed with >4 and Hake with 12,. F. Geneva Loses To Montpelier Friday Night The Geneva Cardinals were handed their second defeat of the season Friday night, losing a hardfpught decision to the Montpelier Pacers, 51-46, at the Montpelier gym. The Cardinals were out in front at the first period, 9-7, but the Blackford county quintet led at the half; 24-20, and at the third period, 36-30. Don Swdttzkopf paced the winners with 18 points, and Kershner had 13. Tom Dull was Geneva’s leading scorer with 16 points, while Tom Stuber had 11. Geneva will play at Roanoke Wednesday night. YELLOW JACKETS The Decatur Yellow Jackets lost a wild and wooly basketball game to the Elmhurst Trojans Friday night at the Elmhurst gym, by a 61-47 score. The game, which got out of hand in the final quarter, was a close contest until the final period, when Elmhurst exploded for 24 points while the Jackets could manage only ten. The Decatur team moved the ball well, but couldn't hit the bucket from anywhere. and the Trojans got hot from out when it counted. Elmhurst moved to a quick~7-2 lead, and it looked for a while as if the contest might become a rout. Bob Shraluka hit two from the field and the Jackets fought back to a two-point deficit, 9-7. From there on, the first period was psetty even, with the Trojans holding a 16-13 margin at the buzzer. Again, Elmhurst widened the lead to a dangerous point. Three baskets gave the Trojans a ninepoint bulge. 22-13. Then Decatur started to hit Shraluka hit a field goal to offset an Elmhurst free throw to make the margin 23-15, and then Decatur connected for ten straight points while holding the Trojans scoreless, to leave the floor at halftime with a 25-23 lead. The third stanza was close all the way. Decatur moved out to a five-point margin, but the outside shooting of the Elmhurst team kept them in the game. Decatur’s scoring through the period was well-divided, while Purkiser dropped in four straight one-handed shots from 30 feet out bn the left side. At the end of three quarters, the score was tied at 37-37. Purkiser hit from the side again at the start of the final period; and from then on, the Trojans were moving away. Elmhurst’s lead steadily increased to the final 14-point margin. Bob Shraluka was the game's high scorer with 19 points, and the only Jacket to hit double figures. Purkiser hit 16 for Elmhurst, while Lattimore and Crawford added 15 each. The loss gives Decatur a 2-2 record for the season. The Jackets next game will- be against the Concordia Cadets in the Central high school gymnasium in Fort Wayne Friday, November 29. Adams Central Scores First Win Os Season The Adams Central Greyhounds, leading all the way, scored their first victory of the season Friday night, downing the Pleasant Mills Spartans, 61-39, at the Pleasant Mills gym. The win was the first for Adams Central after three defeats, and the setback was the fourth for the Spartans In as many starts. The Greyhounds were on top al the first quarter, 14-6, at the half, 25-15, and at the third period, 47-25. Adams Central had well-balanc-ed scoring, Tom Heyerly leading with 13 points, followed by Gary McMillen with 11. Roger Snyder; with 13, and Dwight Brunner, with 12, were top scorers for the Spartans. • The Greyhounds will play at Laneaster Central Tuesday night, while the Spartans will host the Monroeville Cubs Wednesday night at Pleasant Mills. Wildcats Beat Eagles Friday Night 75-33 The Hoagland Wildcats raced to a 20-point advantage in the first quarter and carried on for a onesided 76-33 victory over the Monmouth Eagles Friday night at the Hoagland gym. Hoagland was on top at the first quarter, 24-4, at the half, 42-13, and at the third period, 56-27. Torn Beerman paced the Hoagland triumph with 24 points, while Roger Scheuman tallied 13 points. W — Bas- ’ ketball coach Frank McGuire, who led the North Carolina Tar Heels to the NCAA champidnship last year, has been rewarded with a new five-year contract. The agreement takes effect after McGuire’s old three-vear contract expires next June 30. Salary terms werS not disclosed. Little Damage Done In Accident Here A slight accident on Second street, near Monroe occurred when a car driven by Glen Bauman, 19, Pleasantville,'ran into the back of a car driven by Max Leon Daniels, 18, 923 Mercer Ave. The car driven by Bauman was stopping to park at the time.
