"But I would ye should understand, brethren, that i j the things which happened unto j jme have fallen out rather unto! the furtherance of the gospel • • ■ ■ So that my bonds in Christ are ■ manifest in all the palace, and 1 in all other places;" Paul was actually imprisoned in his own house, guarded by a soldier at all times. He was at liberty to preach bnd was guarded from his enemies. His guards were of high rank, attached to the palace guard Undoubtedly they talked of the unusual prisoner and his message around the palace, so Paul was indirectly reaching people he could never reach under ordinary circumstances. The Christian message was being carried to the very citadel of his enemies. V. 14. “And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear." . Paul's courage'in adversity, his . zeal, the respect with high he was held even by his guards, made claiming the gospel. Vs. 15, 16. 17 "Some indeed other Christians more bold in propreach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of goodwill; 1 . . . The one preach Christ of' contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affiliation to my bonds; . . .But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defense , of the gospel." There were two 1 factions in Rome — one group were loyal to Paul and were encouraged to witness more effectively because of is example; the other group regarded Paul’s imprisonment as a great misfortune that was scandalous. These were the people who were always afraid what people would say about them and their beliefs,.' and were an- i , noyed that some people still consulted Paul .and held him in high 1 respect. Those who were loyal to . ” PSW recognlzedTin Ihim their champion. V. 1.8, "MJiat then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and 1 therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice/'- The one thing that mattered to Paul was that Christ be proclaimed. All personal considerations, were negligible and Paul could even reI joice in the fact his adversaries were proclaiming Christ The Philippians were worried over Paul's plight and he says, in effect, to them. “Why worry about me?” j To Paul, the fact that his imprisonment allowed him to draw jiew. followers to Christ was all-im-portant. V. 19, “For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your . ’ prayer, and the supply of Jesus j I Christ." Paul gives credit to the : Philippians for their prayers tn his behalf and for the presence of the Holy Spirit, He feels sure of de- j liverance from prison in the near I future. V. 280. “According to my earnest : expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, , sc now also Christ shall be magnified in my body .whether it be by life, or by death." Paul was not concerned with whether he should die a martyr in the near future, or should live to proclaim Christ for a while longer. His only hope was that he would bring honir to Christ in all he did. V. 21 "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain." Paul considered that his life belonged: to Christ, and that even death would not end his witnessing but perhaps increase his influence,
