FIRE DESTROYS GARAGE \;4 v, Al#r THE GARAGE, CAR, and boat pictured above were gutted by fire at the home of Mis. Arthur Baker, 328 S. Fifth street, Wednesday about 11 a. m. Mrs. Baker’s son. Robert, stood by helplessly as the boat, which was chained to the garage wall to prevent theft, burned. It was a S7OO fiberglass boat. Fortunately the motor had been taken to the house for the winter. The fire apparently started in the car. Robert noticed that the seat was black and burned, but did not see any smoke. He went to the house and he and his mother searched for the Insurance policy to see if it covered the mysterious burning. While they searched, the fire broke out, and spread to the garage.—<Staff Photo).
body was found buried in a shallow grave near an airport at New Chicago months later. Brown also is accused in the death of Lana Brock, 16, New Chicago. She was murdered about a month after Mrs. Grigonis. Her body was found buried in sand half a mile from where the first victim was buried. The same jurors who had been called for Brown’s trial Monday will be used Dec. 2 and Prosecutor Metro Holovachka said he will ask them to give Brown the death penalty Holovachka said if Brown is not given the maximum sentence, he will order the former mental patient tried for the Brock slaying. Stenhouse said a sanity hearing will be held in the same court the day before Brown goes on trial. Brown was confined to Norman Beatty Memorial Hospital several years ago as a sexual psychopath. Brown and the four other escapees who were recaptured this week are on a "bread-and-water” diet in the disciplinary section of the jail. Tax Board Hearing Here December 3 The state board of tax commissioners will meet at the Adams county auditor’s office Dec. 3, at which time they will determine whether appropriations should be allowed. COURT * (Continued from Psge One) he arrested him for a misdemeanor on his own witness to it. Anderson then read from a law which stated that in the case of a misdemeanor a warrant must be filed in one hour, or the police officer is liable to prosecution, and asked Seitz if he were familiar with that. Seitz replied that he was not. Anderson then asked Seitz if he were present at the trial, and Seitz then said yet. He stated that Mayor Cole heard the case, and that no attorney appeared at that time for Death. Seitz then testified that the mayor had advised Death of his constitutional rights. Anderson then asked him a number of technical questions concerning constitutional rights, and Seitz admitted that he did not know if those had been mentioned at the trial. Mrs, Joe Morin, the former Marlene Laurent, was then called to the witness stand after a short recess. She testified that she had called Mayor Cole the morning of the trial, before the trial took place, and bad written part of the story in the Nov. 2 Decatur Daily Democrat based upon that conversation. The last paragraph in the story tended to show, Anderson stated, that the mayor had pre-judged the case. Mrs. Morin stated that it was written in her wording, and could just have well been written, on the basis of what the mayor said, to include the extra phrase, “if any" in the part of the paragraph referring to any possible charges by the board of works. —- Chief James Borders was then called to the stand, and Borders testified that he had been chief 10 years, and was well acquainted with the defendant. He described his part in the case, and stated that when he talked with the defendant at the county jail he sat opposite him on a bench, and told him that the charge had been filed for public intoxication. He stated that he did not tell Death that he -could hot return to work until the case was finished, and that he did not remember making any such statement to Donald Dale, Mrs. Death’s son. Chief Borders then said that the charges which had been brought to him had been re-typed from his original, and that Mayor Cole had brought the charge to his cottage at Lake Tippecanoe for him to sign. Anderson then closely questioned the chief on the matter of bringing up the petition, to which the prosecutor strenuously objected, on the grounds that it did not bear on the issues of the' case, and Judge Parrish ruled that they should be “admitted for what they were worth, if worth anything at all.”

SEASONAL (Continued from Page Ono) spending — and with It a probable rise in the federal budget, A parade of top administration officials pounded hard on the theme that defense and missile spending would have to take precedence over any balanced budget. Vice President Richard M. Nixon said “we must never make the mistake of putting a price tag on military strength or on what we will do to enable the United States and the Free World to avoid being placed in a position where we can be blackmailed.” _ s Army Secretary Wilber M Brucker said flatly Thursday night that the - country should for|pt about balancing the budget next year. National security conres first, he said. Takes Na Position And Treasury Secretary Robert B. Anders on said he would not take an “absolutist” position on putting a balanced budget ahead of national defense- '7 Eisenhower said in his recent Oklahoma City TV address that government spending would top the current 72 billion dollar rate unless bigger outlays to meet Russia’s missile challenge were offset elsewhere. The administration now is at work drawing up the budget for next fiscal year. In another economic development, the Federal Reserve Board authorized three more District Reserve Banks in Kansas City, Minneapolis and Philadelphia to lower their discount — or interestrates from 3>4 to 3 per cent. lowa Fanner Held For Bank Robbery Caught Four Hours After Bank Holdup FARMERSBURG, lowa (UP) — Cigar in mouth, gun in hand, larceny In mind, a young farmer carried out a carefully plotted bank robbery only to be caught four hours later. Charles Greathause, 25, Volga, was found Thursday afternoon hiding in a haystack to which he had fled when his car became bogged down in a muddy, snow-covered road. Authorities said Greathause had stolen the car, painting it black before he strode into the Farmersburg Savings Bank with two jars full of coins demanding they be changed to currency. He then drew his revolver and vaulted over the counter to pillage the cash drawer. Leaving with SI,OOO, he was heard to grumble: “Small banks never have much money.” As he tooled along a country road, his car became stuck in the mud The resourceful bandit asked a neighborly farmer for a push. Minutes later, he was back on the road, stopping once to fasten stolen license plates on the car with rusty bolts to give it that lived-in appearance. Then the mud halted him again, this time for good. Four highway patrol officers armed with sawedoff shotguns came across the abandoned auto and followed Greathause’s muddy tracks to his haystack refuge. ’ Although he had two guns, Greathouse offered no resistance. He was later identified as the man who robbed the McGregor (Iowa) Bank of $2,700 last June. If you have something to sell or rooms for rent, try a Democrat Want Ad— they bring results.
