Use Os Auditorium Is Denied To ICLU War Memorial Use Is Denied To Union INDIANAPOLIS (UP)—The Indiana Civil Liberties Union has been denied use of the auditorium of the Indiana World War Memorial on grounds it would “desecrate this soil.” The memorial commission arrived at the decision Wednesday after listening to an 18-year-old report saying the ICLU’s parent group, the American Civil Liberties Union, expended 90 per cent of its efforts ‘on behalf of Communists." It was the third time in four years the ICLU’s application to use the state-owned memorial was rejected. In 1953, the group met instead at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church here. The following year, when Paul G. Hoffman, then president of the Studebaker Corp, and former Marshall Plan director, was to have been "the speaker, the ICLU was barred againJudge Clarence McNabb, Fort Wayne, chairman of the commission, told five fellow commissioners that a 1939 file of the House Um-Amerlcan Activities Committee included a report that "90 per cent of the ACLU efforts were on behalf of Commutarts." t ATthotigh ACLU "officers have disavowed" any connection with communism in recent years, McNabb said, some board members fiaVe been found “with Communist affiliations.” Five of the commission's 11 members were not present when the unanimous vote was cast. On hearing of the commission's decision, Gov. Harold Handley said he would do nothing to alter it. .. .. IKE , _ (Continued from Pax* One) Secretary of State John Foster Dulles Wednesday night sounded an important note for the coming NATO meeting. He said an attack on NATO forces anywhere in the world would bring a U.S- response "comparable to Pearl Harbor." He said NATO and American forces are so intermixed throughout the world that an attack automatically would involve U.S. forces. “rise < Continusd from Psge One) two months.
