I cations that much of the aid would I come in the form of machinery. ■ i mining and technical equipment I; and factories. ; Western diplomats saw consider- ' able danger in such a deal for ■ i Egypt. They said the Russians could get a grip on the Egyptian ; | economy since they alone could ; supply the spare parts and replacements which would be needi ed. \ President Gamal Abdel Nasser already has mortgaged Egypt's i cotton crop to the Communists ! under his arms deal with the I Soviet bloc. > Landrey also reported that the 1 ■ Soviet economic offer would strengthen Russia’s position in the Middle East while at the same ' time restoring much of Nasser's .prestige in the area. Diplomats in Cairo were said to feel the agreement, coming on the heels of the Syrian-Soviet deal, wpuld have considerable impact on other Arab nations and single out Russia as a potential major source of aid. Reports from Washington said ; the United States is maintaining a trickle of economic aid to Egypt
in hopes the Egyptians eventually will break away from economic dependence on Russia. The U.S. Wednesday released a $600,000 aid payment to the Nasser government It was the first grant in American aid since Nasser seized the Suez Canal last year. ...yb., * Lafayette Bishop Dies On Wednesday LAFAYETTE > HR- Funeral services will be held Monday for the Most Rev.
