This lesson emphasizes the fact that regular and systematic giving should be a distinctive mark of true Christian fellowship. It is always essential that Christians ; give to those causes which are important in the advancement of ' the kingdom of God, and to the re- { lief of human distress. V. 1. “Now concerning the col- , ' lection for the saints, as I have ( given order to the churches of i ( Galatia, even so do ye." Paul is I ( concerned for the poor Christians ( in Jerusalem who were in great ] need of help. ■T „ m | gatherings when I come . . . And when I come, whomsoever ye shall approve by your letters, them will I send to bring your liberality unto Jerusalem. . . And if it be meet that I go also, they shall go with me.” There is indicated that the early Christians probably met for worship on Sunday, the first day of the week, commemorating Christ’s resurrection. There was to be a stipuated time for giving, and the amount was to be determined by one’s ability to pay. Whatever was collected was to be given to duly elected stewards, who. With Paul, would take the money to Jerusalem. Vs. 5. 6,7. “Now I will come unto you, when I shall pass through Macedonia: for I do pass through Macedonia . . . And it may be that I will abide, yea, and winter with you, that ye may bring me on my journey whithersoever I go . . . For I will not see you now by the way; but I trust to tarry awhile with you, if the Lord permit.” Some criticized Paid for traveling so much, but he went where he felt he was needed most. He knew the Corinthian church heeded strengthening, and he wanted to spend some time there when he did go there. So instead of going directly to Corinth from Ephesus where he wrote the letter, he decided to go to Macedonia first. Vs. 8, 9. “But I will tarry at Ephesus until Pentecost . . . For a great door is opened unto me, and there are many adversaries.” Paul had established a strong church in Ephesus, in spite of the fact that there was located the temple of Diana, one of the wonders of the world, and a center of many religious pilgrimages. Consequently, in Ephesus, Paul had a chance to present the gospel to a wide Variety of people from different parts of the world. There he could strike at the very heart of paganism.
