Devine Appointed As Cardinals Boss ST. LdtriS (UP)—New St. Louis Cardinal general manager Vaughn (Bing) Devine said today he will ask Redbird manager Fred Hutchinson to return to St. Louis. “1 want to discuss some of the players with Hutch, then I’ll have to get someone to take over my old job,” Devine said. “I’m especially interested in what Fred may have scouted up on his trip south and to Cuba. Hutch has done an outstanding job and I'm glad he’s with us-” Devine, a native St. Louisiato, was graduated from Washington University here in 1938. “I guess I never had* what you might call an ambition,” Devine said. “I liked to write sports and play baseball, but when I graduated I didn't have anything in particular in mind.’’ Devine played Municipal League baseball in St. Louis and played pro-ball at Findlay, Ohio, in 1939. He returned to St. Louis that summer to work in the Cardinals’ publicity office. He held various positions with the Cardinal organization and, in 1949, was made general manager of the Rochester farm team in the International League. In 1956 he was appointed executive assistant to Frank Lane. Frank Lane Is Named As Cleveland Boss CLEVELAND, Ohio (UP)—New general manager Frank Lane of the Cleveland Indians arrived here today to begin flexing the “free hand” the Tribe directors promised when they announced his appointment Tuesday. It was unqualified control of the Indians which Lane sought when he offered himself to the directors. Until Lane acted, the Indians recognized the claim of the St. Louis Cardinals on Lane. Once it was clear that Lane sincerely wanted to accept the Cleveland challenge, he got his contract on his terms First was that “free hand.” Then came “a three-year contract and a higher salary than I got in St. Louis.” Lane arrived for day look around Cleveland. Heifras due to return to St. Louis for ohe day, then fly to Havana to confer with the Tribe’s new field manager, Bobby Brag an, who is piloting a club there.’ “I know -, the Cleveland club well," Lane said. “But it’s premature to talk deals. The ultimate decisions will be made by Bragan and Lane.” Lane recommended Bra g a n strongly to Greenberg while Hank was seeking a successor to oneycar field manager Kerby Farrell. Lane termed his new partner “a very good manager — with creative ability.” Land cancelled the third year of his pact with owner August A Busch Jr. of the Cards. He said he would “go elsewhere" if the Cleveland job fell through. Lane’s reward in St. Louis, exceeded by the Tribe, was a $50,000 annual salary, five cents on each fan over 800,000 and a liberal expense account, Farm-City Meeting Os Lions Nov. 25 Lions clubs members will be expected to bring a farmer guest to the farm-city week meeting Monday, Nov. 25, Cletus Gillman, chairman of the program, warned today. Jake Krider, vice president of Central Soya in charge of *public relations, will be the speaker, and his topic will be “Observations of agricuture and business in Great Britain and the continent.” Krider has returned recently from a tour of farms there, and has very interesting slides on farm animals in that area. Chairman Gillman and county agent Leo N. Scltcnright have names of several farmers anxious to hear Dr. Krider, in case some members are unable to think of a farmer-friend. Lions must check out at the regular time if they do not intend to bring a guest, Gillman added. Pro Basketball' Boston 107, Minneapolis 104. Detroit 109, New York 107.
