Small Business Men Ask For Tax Relief Charge Present Laws Favor Corporations CHICAGO. (UP) — Representatives of small business in the Chicago area pleaded for tax relief today in a special hearing of the Senate Small Business Committee. George F. Connelly, a Chicago plumbing contractor and Clarence J. McCorkle, an automobile dealer, charged that present tax laws favor large corporations in such things as tax-deferred pension plan payments. They said owners of unincorporated business and partnerships are unable under present laws to set up pension plans, stock bonus plans or other such devices from which corporation officials in large companies benefit Connelly said the small businessmen were not psking for tax exexemption, merely relief. The committee, headed by acting Chairman Wayne Morse (DOre.) heard approximately 20 persons give oral testimony. Written statements from other small businessmen were read into the record. Sen. Edward J. Thye (R-Minn.), ranking minority member was also present at the hearing. Sen. Paul Douglas (D-Ill.) joined the group for the hearing. Spokesmen for the Chicago Electro-Plating Institute, a trade association of about 300 small electro-plating shops, urged passage of 85 House and Senate bills which would amend the Internal Revenue Code They said tax relief for small business was necessary to counteract the effect of increasing mergers in big business. The hearings were one of a series the committee is holding to sample opinion throughout the nation. Mother Hangs Four Small Daughters Youngest Revived, Three Others Dead TORONTO (W — A 27-year-old mother whose four small daughters were found hanged Monday in her basement was scheduled toundergo mental examination today. The mother, Mrs. Maureen O’Donohue, wife of a-prominent and successful attorney, was taken into police custody on unspecified charges two hours after the children were found. Three of the little girls, Maureen, 4; Eileen, 3, and Katherine, 2, were killed. The fourth, Mary Josephine, 6 months, was revived by artificial respiration and was said to be in good condition today. Mrs. O’Donohue, a trained nurse, was said by neighbors to have “created a happy home filled with love and tenderness.’ 1 Her husband, Melville O’Donohue", said she had telephoned him at his office Monday morning to say she was ill. O’Donohue called a next-door neighbor, Dr. Jean Turner, and asked her to look in on his wife. Dr. Turner said she found Mrs. O’Donohue “distraught and highly agitated.” q “I sensed something was wrong," she said, “and I searched the house and finally went down in the basement laundry room.” There she found the four little bodies hanging from the rafters. Attorney General Takes Office Today William F. Rogers Takes Office Today WASHINGTON (UP) — William P Rogers, the new attorney general who takes office today, will champion civil rights as staunchly as his predecessor, Justice Department sources said. But diplomatic Rogers is not as not as likely to rouse Southern anger as was his predecessor Herbert Brownell Jr. Arkansas Gov. Orval E. Fabus said Monday the change in the top justice office will mean a return to "understanding, patience and tolerance” in the government’s attitude toward segregation problems. Justice Department sources pointed out Rogers sat in on all the big policy-making meetings during the Little Rock integration crisis.
They said there was never any friction on this score between Rogers, then deputy attorney general, and his boss Brownell. But the sources said pro-segre-gationists are going to find it more difficult to cast Rogers in the role of villain than they did Brownell. More flexible, more ready to compromise, Rogers uses the technique of friendly persuasion with Congress. Popular on Capitol Hill, he has seldom rubbed the lawmakers the wrong way. Brownell, less outgoing and identified with GOP politics, often clashed with congressmen. This inevitably made his task a tougher one Since his appointment Rogers has declined to discuss some of the pressing civil rights problems. He said it would be “inappropriate” before he got his feet wet in the new job. But in speeches on the question in the past Rogers has taken a firm line. He also has praised the Eisenhower administration repeatedly for “progress” and achievements in the field of civil rights in the past four years. Three New Members On Notre Dame Board SOUTH BEND (IF — The University of Notre Dame Associate Board of Lay Trustees has three new members—William R. Daley, Cleveland; Joseph L. O'Neill Jr., Midland, Tex., and Alfred C. Stephen Jr., Chicago. BID L (Continued from Page One) th? cuts today from Republican National Chairman Meade Alcorn. In a speech prepared for- Republican workers in Oakland, Calif., Alcorn said Congress "slashed” 52,500,000.000 from Eisenhower’s defense request. "Retired Defense Secretary Charles E. Wilson also said Monday night in Detroit he thought the nation was “getting too complacent” when Congress cut the defense appropriation last summer In other major U.S. missile-sat-ellite developments: —Gen. Lauris Norstad, NATO Commander, said he had submitted a strategic outline for the next five years on the assumption Russia could launch not only an earth satellite but "a vehicle able to gather and transmit military information.” Norstad said the West s air - atomic power and worldwide military bases will hold the military balance of power “for some years to come.” —The Senate Preparedness Subcommittee moved to speed hearings on the U.S. place in the space missile race. An administratiorf source told was contacted at about the time of the United Press that Stevenson the recent conference of President Eisenhower and British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan. The two leaders agreed to seek closer military - scientific cooperation among NATO and other free world powers.
RUSSIA (Continued irom Page One) both nations. Relations between the United States and Syria have been strained since last October when Syria announced discovery of an American “plot” to overthrow the Syrian regime. Since then Moscow has joined Syria in accusing the United States of urging Turkey to attack Syria.
