sters Unioa. were among the 421 persons for whom Shefferman’s discount purchase arrangements bought $478,451 worth of merchandise. A committee aide said Styles, when interviewed, stated that he for $2,700 worth of purchase. After had fully reimbursed Shefferman hearing the committee notified newsmen that English has checks to prove that he repaid Shefferman for all of the $19,611 worth of goods bought for him. <
Pedestrian Killed When Hit By Auto ENGLISH (W — Charles R. Simms, 39, Wyandotte, was killed Tuesday night when struck by an automobile as he walked along the Wyandotte Cave Road. The car was driven by Vernon Saltsgaver, 33, Wyandotte, who was found slumped over the steering wheel unconscious half a mile down the road from the scene of the accident.

Second Satellite Is Seen Over Midwest Report Sputnik II Observed Clearly CHICAGO (UP)—Russia's second satellite. Sputnik 11, was clearly observed over Chicago and other Midwestern cities today, appearing like a large blue-white diamond in its silent sweep across the sky. Moon watchers, newsmen and others reported seeing the dogcarrying satellite from the West Coast to the Midwest. It first flashed over northern California between San Francisco and Monterey at 7:28 a.m. c.s.t. Other points sighting the satellite included Kansas City, Grand Island, Neb., Paducah, Ky., Green Bay, Wis., Milwaukee, and Rockford and Springfield. 111. It became visible in Chicago at 5:47 a.m. c.s.t., right on the schedule previously announced by the Smithsonian Institute. Sputnik II was clearly visible to the naked eye in the cloudless, pre-dawn sky. Among those sighting the satellite were three United Press newsmen who watched from the roof of the 27-story Daily News Building in Chicago. The satellite first was seen in the southwest near the horizon and followed a generally northeasterly course, disappearing over Lake Michigan. Rodney J. Faxon, Ground Observer Corps coordinator for Chicago, said the satellite was visible over Chicago for 3% minutes. He said the audio beeping sound was picked up at 5:37 a.m., and the sound faded out about 10 minutes after Sputnik II was lost from sight. The satellite appeared to be a brilliant, white light moving swiftly beneath the stars. School Consolidation Rejected By Voters TIPTON W — A move to consolidate Madison and Wildcat School Twps. was rejected Tuesday night. Wildcat residents favored consolidation. 224 to 142, but Madison rejected it, 475 to 166. Officials said Wildcat probably will go ahead with plans to build a $160,000 six-room addition to its school at Windfall.
