Chuck Mather Quits Post As Kansas Coach LAWRENCE, Kan., (UP)—Staggering Kansas, a stranger to football’s big-time since the brief regime of George Sauer, today began a cold search for a new coach following the surprise resignation of Chuck Mather and five assistants. University officials, who said no successor was immediately in sight, unanimously termed the mass announcement a "shock.” Mather, 41. and possessor of one of the nation’s most fabled records as a high school coach at Massillon, Ohio, attributed the action to a desire “not to have our boys competing under the pressure of saving the coach's job.” The Jayhawks, racked by recurring injuries and unspared by, a sweeping flu siege, have won only one game this fall, losing four and tieing one. Mather’s record through his original three - year contract which was renewed for a year last spring was 6-22-1. Can’t Solve Problem Mather and five hand-picked assistants, four brought to K-U when he assumed the head coaching role from J. V, Sikes, said their decision came after a Tuesday night conference. The group said it decided "we cannot solve the football problem" at Kansas "even by winning the four remaining games. Included in the move, college football’s biggest shuffle of the year, were assistants Paul Schofer Luri Wartiainen, Dave Putts, Dick Piskoty and Tom Triplett. All but Triplett had been with Mather several seasons, most at Massillon Washington High where he won six straight Ohio Prep titles. University sources said they had contacted no one and ‘‘have no successor in mind.” However, a source close to the athletic department said “certain prominent alumni” had already conferred with Arkansas mentor, Jack Mitchell. Mather and the five resigning assistants will fulfill their present contracts by completing the current season. Mather, who declined comment on his future plans, broke the news to the squad before Wednesday’s practice. He said it would relieve pressure from the team’s mind and "not divert their attention" for the remainder of the year. » .1.- .111,., . ...W. Witte Making Bid For I.U. Varsity BLOOMINGTON - A week and a half of practice probably isn’t enough to prove it, but all indications point toward success in Coach Branch McCracken’s experimental move of All-American Archie Dees from center to forward in Indiana’s 1957-58 basketball lineup. The 6-8 Dees, who breezed to the Big Ten scoring championship and most-valuable player selection on the Hoosier co-champions, hasn’t surprised anyone by fitting into his new assignment flawlessly. After all, he had virtually played the same position frequently last year and has the quickrtess, speed and agility—and the shots—to play the corners. Just as important has been sophmore Frank Radovich’s early performances at center, which Dees vacated to make room in the lineup. The 6-8 all-stater from Hammond will prove difficult to beat out from what he’s shown on the floor and under the boards, but he has strong opposition from Norb Witte, 6-8 soph from Monmouth, and greatly-improved Lee Aldridge, 6-6 letterman from Switz City. In early drills it looks like Dees, backed up by 6-4 sophomore Glen Butte, of Milan, and letterman Ray Ball, of Elkhart, at one forward and letterman Jerry Thompson at the other, supported by 6-5 Jim Hinds and 6-5 Bill Balch. Four Tie For Lead In San Diego Open SAN DIEGO, Calif., (UP)-The hottest band of touring professional golfers in history teed off in the second round of the $20,000 San Diego Open today bent on smashing every record in the books. The 137 pros and amateurs who played Wednesday shot an amazing total of 15 eagles, one hole-in-one, and 64 of them broke par on the Mission Valley Country Club course that isn't exactly a pushover. The first-day leaders were Bobby Rosburg, of San Francisco, Arnold Palmer, of Latrobe, Pa., Don Whitt, of Alameda, Calif., and Charles Slfford, of Philadelphia. They breezed around before the rains came in seven-under-par 655. A seven-under-par performance in most tournaments would mean a comfortable lead. But it put them only one stroke ahead of three shot makers in this one and two ahead of seven men who had 67. The 66 shooters were all veterans. Doug Ford, current Masters Champion and former PGA 'title holder, from Mahopac, N.Y., Fred Hawkins, El Paso, Tex., and former National Open champion Lloyd Mangrum, of Apple Valley, Calif. At 67 came Al Baldin, Miami, Fla., Mike Fetechick, Yonkers, N. Y., Jay Hebert, Sanford, Fla., Bill Bisdorf, San Diego, Calif.. Bob Anman, Detroit, Dow Finsterwald, Tequesta, Fla., and Eric Monti, Los Angeles. The 68s were Tommy Bolt, Los Angeles; Babe Lichardus, Hillsdale, N. J.; Jerry Barber, Los Angeles; Bill Johnston, Provo, Utah; Marty Furgol, Lemont, Ill.; Ernie Vossler, Midland, Tex.; Paul O’Leary. Culver City, Calif.; George Bayer, Dallas. Tex., Paul Harney, Worcester, Mass.; and amateur Phil Rodgers, San Diego. Isaac Logart Top Title Contender NEW YORK (UP)-Isaac Logart, dynamic Cuban body-punch-er, was named top contender for the vacant world welterweight title today in the Ring Magazine's latest ratings. At the same time, odds - man Eddie Borden, publisher of the Weekly Boxing World, announced that Logart would be favored at least 7-5 against any one of the other five men expected to be included in the tournament for the.vacant 147-pound crown. Names of the six men in the tourney will be announced Friday or Monday by Julius Helfand, chairmab of the World Championship Committee and chairman of the N.Y. State Athletic Commission. Virgil Akins of St. Louis, who clinched a berth in the tournament by knocking out ex-champion Tony DeMarco at Boston, Tuesday night was boosted from sixth to second among contenders in the ring ratings. DeMarco was dropped from first to third, but his six trips to the* canvaS in the Akins’ fight ifre “ expected to rifle him out of the tourney. DeMarco's defeat automatically boosted Cuban Logart from second place to first. - ' The tournament, expected to be fought out within 90 days, will determine a successor to Carmen Basilio, whose 147-pound crown was vacated automatically on Sept. 23 when he won the middleweight (160-pound) title from Sugar Ray Robinson. For various reasons, the six man eliminations are expected to include the following: Logart (1), Akins (2), Vince Martinez o fPaterson, N. J. (4), Gil Turner of Philadelphia (6), Gasper Ortega of Mexico (7) and George Barnes of Australia (8). Pistons Are Winners Over Lgkers, 115-96 By UNITED PRESS George Mikan, who had many a night to remember in Minneapolis, has one today that he’d rather forget. The National Basketball Association's one-time scoring wonder made his coaching debut before the home folks Wednesday night and suffered through 48 minutes as the Detroit Pistons routed his Lakers, 115-96. It was the second loss in a row for the Lakers, the only winless team in the circuit. If you have something to sen Or rooms for rent, try a Democrat Want Ad— they bring results.
