Berne Bears Open Season Friday Night The Berne Bears, under the guidance of new coach William F. Anderson, will open their 195758 season Friday night, hosting the Pleasant Mills Sparatans at the Berne gym. Almost the entire starting team from last year’s club, which won the county tourney and advanced to the finals of the sectional, was lost by graduation. Gary Beaty, regular guard, is the only returning letterman from the squad which won 14 games and lost 10, including tourney play. Missing are Pete Schug, Fred Whitehurst, Bob Dille, Carl Liechty, Lynn Lehman, Pete Brower and Ken Von Gunten. In addition to Beaty, coach Anderson has Fred Stahly and Tony and Alan Yoder back from last year’s varsity. Others on the first squad at the present time are Bryce Winteregg, John Hartman and Tom Steury, up from the second team, plus Ernie Kuntz, a senior; Ron Lautzenheiser, Mike Collier and Dave Klopfenstein, juniors, and Phil Sprunger, sophomore. The first seven players include two over the six-foot mark. Winteregg and Hartman, but both lack first team experience. Indications are the second team will be made up almost entirely of sophomores, with one or two freshmen given «

Michigan And lowa Rated As Even Saturday NEW YORK (UP)— Five of the six major undefeated and untied college football teams are favored by oddsmakers to retain their perfect records in Saturday’s games. Notre Dame was rated three points over Navy; Texas A & M was six over Arkansas; Oklahoma was 30 over Kansas State; Auburn was eight over Florida, and Dartmouth three over Yale. Odds Are Close The lowa - Michigan game was the closest, of course, and four were one-point picks — Nebraska over Kansas, Stanford over Oregon, West Virginia over Penn State and Baylor over Texas Christian. DfISKfi»MWL The dribble and shoot season opens Friday! 000 1 ■ ' High school basketball, still the king of sports in Hoosierdom, will be launched Friday, Nov. 1, the earliest starting date for official play under rules of the Indiana high school athletic association. —7oOo——of Adams county’s eight high schools will open Friday night, with two games on the schedule. The Adams Central Greyhounds will entertain the Geneva Cardinals at Adams Central, and the Berne Bears will be hosts to the Pleasant Mills Spartans at* the Berne gym. —oOo— Three schools wait until next week to start season activities, the Decatur Commodores playing host to the Monroeville Cubs at the Decatur gym Tuesday, the sectional champion Hartford Gorillas will travel to Union Center in Wells county for their opener, also on Tuesday, while the Monmouth Eagles open Friday, Nov. 8, playing at Adams Central. The Decatur Yellow Jackets will open Tuesday Nov. 12, meeting Monmouth. —oOo——of the teams will be under the guidance of new coaches this year, with two of the newcomers matching wits Friday night at Berne. William F. Anderson has the reins at Berne and Arnold H. Getting has taken over at Pleasant Mills. The other new coaches are Harold Clinkenbeard at Monmouth and Paul Bevelhimer with the Decatur Yellow Jackets. Several major rule changes have been made tn high school rules for this season, with which fans should become familiar for better enjoyment Os the game. The major changes: ’J 1— The foul lanes will now be 12 feet wide. 2— Each team will be permitted four fouls in each half before the other team is awarded a bonus shot. 3— No free throw shooting will take place after a double foul. Players will be charged with a foul, but a jump ball will be held without shooting free throws. This will not apply when a false double foul is called or a foul called after the whistle. Then the shots will be taken. 4— The ball may now be tossed in from under the basket. Last year, the ball had to be put in play from the sides of the free throw line extended. . 5— If the ball travels beyond the backboard, it shall be declared out of bounds and awarded to the defensive team. This will eliminate shooting from behind the backboards as was done to advantage in some quarters last season. 6— If, in the officials’ judgment, a team is stalling, he must call time out and warn the captain of the team in possession of the ball. If he still is of the opinion that said team is stalling, he will again halt play and call a technical foul. 7— Ten minutes before the designated starting time of a game, each coach must give the official scorer the names and numbers of every boy in uniform. Three minutes prior to the game he must indicate his starting five. Failure to do this will result in a technical foul. The Limberiost Bell, traveling trophy for Adams county teams, will be up for grabs tn the season opener at Beirne Friday night. The Berne Bears took possession of the bell by winning the county tourney last ■ January, and were undefeated by county teams in the rest of the season. The bell, of course, is not up for possession in the sectional tourney, as trophies are barred by IHSAA rules for sectional, regional and semifinal tourneys. Final standings of the Adams county teams last season, including county and holiday tourneys, but not the sectional, were as follows: W L Pct. Hartford — 20 1 .952 Geneva ,15 5 .750 Yellow Jackets ... 15 5 .750 Commodores 12 7 .632 Berne 12 9 .571 Adams Central 7 12 .368 Pleasant Mills .... «,7 12 .368 Monmouth ... 3 16 .158 —oOo-— /, Results one year ago this week: Geneva 56, Adams Central 55 (double overtime).
