Four Unbeaten Teams Facing Tough Battles By FRED DOWN United Press Sports Writer Four of the nation's six remaining unbeaten and untied major powers will face tough, once-beat-en opponents next Saturday when the final push for lucrative bowl bids begins in earnest. Oklahoma, its • national crown drooping a bit to the port side after Saturday's 14-13 squeaker with Colorado, should have relatively easy pickings with Kansas State (2-3-1) and Auburn, 48-7 victor over Houston Saturday night, will be a solid choice over Florida.. But the other four — secondranked lowa, third-ranked Texas A&M. fifth-ranked Notre Dame and unranked but also unbeaten and untied Dartmouth — could easily be knocked out of the elite group. In Texas A&M’s case, a defeat could mean no telephone call from the Cotton Bowl Committee. lowa Wins In Rain lowa, which beat Northwestern. 6-0. on a raih-and-snow soaked field thanks to a fluke play, goes against Michigan, which is 4-1 overall and walloped Minnesota. 24-7, on Saturday. Ohio State. Big Ten co-leader ■ and the league’s likely Rose Bowl nominee, takes on Northwestern, Illinois plays Purdue, Minnesota meets Indiana and Michigan State plays Wisconsin in other games, Texas A&M. 6-0 after Saturday’s 14-0 triumph over Baylor draws a real ‘toughie” in the Arkansas Razorbacks. The R a z o r backs knocked Mississippi from the per-fect-record list, 12-6, and have outscored six- opponents. 105-61, in running up a 5-1 overall record. Notre Dame, making a great comeback uiWer Terry Brennan, places its 4-0 record on the line against.,a Navy team that has won five games, lost by a touchdown to North Carolina and romped over Pennsylvania, 35-7, Saturday. Always a colorful game, this one ranks as one of the top intersectional clashes of the entire season. Dartmouth, Yale Clash Dartmouth, 3-0 in the Ivy League and 5-0 overall, is pitted against Yale which lost its only game by one point to Brown. Princeton, bed with Dartmouth for the league lead, plays Brown so both leaders are in jeopardy. Dartmouth whipped Harvard. 26-0, Saturday while Princeton routed Cornell. 47-14, with a four-touchdown spree in the fourth period. The bowl picture, following the weekend action, is roughly this: Oregon' and Ohio State l<x)k like the Rose Bowl opponents; Auburn is on the high road to the Sugar Bowl with its likely opponent still very much in doubt; it looks like Oklahoma vs, Duke in the Orange Bowl and Texas A&M vs. Mississippi in the Cotton Bowl. Army, still rated the East’s best despite a surprisingly close one, 20-12, against Virginia, will not play in the Sugar Bowl because of Louisiana segregation laws but might be receptive to a Cotton Bbwl invitation. Michigan And lowa Meet In Feature Game By DOUG TIMBERLAKE United Press Sports Writer The University of Michigan’s Wolverines face another "must” game Saturday when they host the Big Ten and Rose Bowl champion lowa Hawkeyes in the Big Ten's top game of the week. The Wolverines, fresh from a Little Brown Jug win over Minnesota, must now -face another serious threat to their Rose Bowl hopes. Another conference loss, coupled with an Ohio State win over Northwestern at Columbus, could explode any Michigan hopes of a journey to Pasadena in January. lowa will carry its undefeated record to Ann Abor, but the Hawkeyes are not eligible to play in the Rose Bowl even if they win the Big Ten Conference. The only other team undefeated in conference play, Ohio State, will meet the Northwestern Wildcats who haven’t been able to hit the win column this season. Michigan State, with three wins against one conference loss, meets the Wisconsin Badgers at Madison. Die Spartans are still very much in the conference title race, and the Badgers will be out to even

Milwaukee Braves Fire Three Coaches MILWAUKEE (UP) - Bullpen Coach Bob Keely today was the only survivor of a wholesale shakeup in the coaching staff of the world champion Milwaukee Braves that saw three of Manager Fred Haney’s aides fired. The Braves’ front office discharged Pitching Coach Charlie Root. Third Base Coach Connie Ryan and First Base Coach John Riddle in a surprise move late Saturday. Former major league hurler Whitlow Wyatt of the Philadelphia Phillies’ staff was immediately named the new pitching coach. John Fitzpatrick, a coach at Holly-
wood in 1957 and a long-time friend of Haney’s, got Rlddle’B job. The Braves said a third base boss will ba hired later. Candidates rumored for the post were Beq Geraghty and Sibby Sisti of the Milwaukee minor league organization, Coach Eddie Stanky of the Cleveland Indians and Charlie Dressen, who resigned Friday as assistant to President Calvin Griffith of the Washington Senators. Ryan’s dismissal had been predicted because of reported rifts with Haney and Root was said to have been considering retirement when the Braves dropped their axe. Riddle's dismissal was unexpected.
