WORLD COMMUNITY DAY TO BE OBSERVED FRIDAY The United Council of Church Women will sponsor a program on World Community day next Friday, at 7:30 p. m., in the First Methodist church. Theme of the meeting is "Bread, Freedom, Digntiy.” Mrs. Stuart Brightwell, president of the council of church women, will preside during the meeting and install the new officers. Speakers will be Miss Frances Dugan,, program chairman, and the Rev. William C. Feller, pastor of the Zion Evangelical and Reformed church. Ushers from both the Methodist and Reformed churches will assist, and will receive clothing, which is being collected as “parcels of peace,” to be sent to homeless families who as refugees are still in camps in Europe, the Middle East and in Southeast Asia. Women of the county churches are urged to attend, and to bring wearable used clothing, children's or adult's, blankets or yard goods. The U. N. C. W. hopes

to make this observance of World Community day an opportunity to advance understanding of some world problems and to help in places of great need. “FAITH” IS TOPIC OF RECENT CIRCLE MEETING “Faith” was the topic of the recent program of the Ruth and Naomi circle of the Zion E. and R. church, which met in the church parlors. Mrs. Charles Beineke, leader for the afternoon, led the women in singing "Faith of Our Fathers,” to open the meeting, then led in the responsive reading of “Faith in God.” The lesson topic, “Faith,” was introduced by circle chairman Mrs. Tony Meyer, who presented an interesting program on the subject. Mrs. Rufus Kirchhofer, Mrs. Bertha Hoyer and Mrs. Beineke reported on the regional meeting of the women’s guild, which they recently attended at Franklin, after which It was reported that there were 22 sick calls and 28 social calls made during the past month. Later, after the meeting was closed with the repeating of “The Lord’s Prayer,” Mrs. James Baker and Mrs. Floyd Shoaf served a luncheon to the 16 members present. The children of tile Mt. Pleasant Methodist church are planning to conduct a “Trick or treat” for UNICEF, next Tuesday evening, at 6:30 p.m. An all day meeting of the Zion Lutheran Needle club will begin at 9 a.m. next Thursday, at the church parish. Wfek, MR. AND MRS. DAVID C. EMBLER, SR., of Columbia. South Carolina, and formerly of this city, have announced the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their only daughter. Elsbeth, to John R. Hammond, youngest son of Mrs. Carl Hammond, of 621 Nuttman avenue, Decatur, and the late Carl Hammond. Nuptial vows will be repeated December 21, in the Ebenezer Lutheran church in Columbia. The bride-elect attended Decatur high school, and was graduated from the Columbia high school. She is presently employed by a local loan concern in Columbia. Her fiance, a graduate of Decatur high school, attended Indiana University extension in Fort Wayne, and is now associated in the grain inspection business.
Decatur Man Makes Paper's Front Page Decatur’s Fairway Restaurant manager, Cletus Miller, made the front page of the Marion, 0., newspaper recently with a big picture of a still bigger post card, 5% feet by 2 feet, which the postman delivered to Jill Young, 5-year-old Roy Rogers fan of that city. The post card included an almost lifesized picture of Rogers and his horse Trigger. Postal officials in Marion stated that it was the largest and most unique card ever received there, it is also to be the largest card ever mailed in Decatur. Young Farmer Class At Adams Central A young farmer class will be organized at the Adams Central school Tuesday evening at 7:15 o’clock. The subjects to be taught this year are farm tools, wood working and arc welding. Any young fariper living in the Adams Central school area is welcome to attend this series of meetings. Total Tax Payments Reported By NIPSCO “Payment of more than two and a half million dollars in real estate and personal property taxes this week by Northern Indiana Public Service company raised the firm’s total property tax contribution for the year to local and state governments above the five million dollar mark,” Deah H. Mitchell, NIPSCO president said today. M J. Pryor. Decatur district manager, said that the total local taxes paid by the utility in Adams county in 1957 amounted to $lB,523.32, of which $14,588 34 went to the city of Decatur. Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Sellemeyer, of Arcadia, Calif., Mrs. William Warner, of New York City, Mrs. N. E. Vitz, of Payne, Ohio, and Miss Kay Yager, of Chicago, 111., were recent dinner guests of Miss Matilda Sellemeyer and Mrs. Ralph Yager at the Yager residence. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Teeple and daughters Gladys and Belva have returned from a trip west. During their traveling, they visisetd relatives in Portland, Ore., and Seattle, Wash.

The council gave the unions three weeks to remove James G. Cross, head of the 160,000-member bakers union and Anthony F. Valente, president of the 40,000-mem-ber textile workers. Jphnston. 53, Lafayette salesman, on a first-de-gree murder charge Friday and recommended death ip the electric chair as a penalty. Johnston was accused of shooting Mrs. Vida Mae Foxworthy, 54, last May 4 in his room in an Attica hotel where Mrs. Foxworthy worked as a maid. Former Judge's Body Is Found In Creek INDIANAPOLIS (UP) — The body of former Marion Superior Judge Henry O. Goett, 57, was found floating in Fall Creek Friday, a mile from the hospital from which he disappeared mysteriously two weeks ago. Goett was undergoing examination for a diabetic condition when he vanished from his hospital room and touched off an intense search. Driver Killed When Truck Leaves Road BOONVILLE (ffl — William O. "Wall Against the Night,” first book by Frederick Shroyer, formerly of Decatur, and now professor of English at Los Angeles State College, was released Friday in book stores across the continent by Appleton-Century-Crofts, Inc., of New York. Shroyer, a graduate of Decatur high school, visited in Decatur several weeks this summer. He is a member of the Adams county historical society. The book is the story “of a man and wife, and of a town that would not let them alone." The town is located several hours from Chicago by train, and a short distance from a large city. The story is told in beautifully etched scenes, a powerful and gripping novel of a town and its impact on a man who struggles desperately to find a purpose for his life. Several authors who have reviewed it have predicted that the book will be a great success. The picture the same one which apears. on the cover of the book, was taken by Decatur photographer LA wren ce E. Anspaugh, who is credited with the picture on the book's cover. Plant Production Is Slowed By Flu SOUTH BEND W- — Production lines at the Studebaker-Packard Corp, were shut down at noon Friday because absenteeism stemming from an outbreak of flu stoppeg the flow of many component parts to the final assembly line. About 20 percent of 7,500 workers were absent. The company will try to reopen the assembly line Monday. Griffith Woman Is Mother Os Triplets GARY’w — Mrs. Willis Wyland, 25, Griffith, gave birth to triplet daughters at Methodist hospital Friday within four minutes. Hie Wylands have one other child, a 3-year-old boy. The triplets weighed about three pounds each. Given Jail Sentence For Newspaper Theft INDIANAPOLIS (W — Benjamin H. Springer, 32, Indianapolis, was sentenced to 10 days in jail and fined sl2 and costs Friday by Municipal Judge Virgil J. Norris for taking a newspaper from a self-service bpx on a street corner without paying for it. The charge was petty larceny. . South Bend Woman Is Killed In Accident _ SOUTH BEND ffll — Katherine Moore, 29. South Bend, was killed late Friday night in Ind. 2 two miles west of South Bend when an automobile skidded on pavement and struck a culvert and rolled over. Safer Behind Bars PORTLAND, Me. W — Police have ruled the turnkey's room in headquarters out of bounds for questioning 9! prisoners. Too many police offers were getting hurt in scuffles with obstreperous prisoners. The new policy is to lock up prisoners in a cell and toss questions from outside the bars.
