LABOR SPY (Continued from Page One) Checov is in Vancodver, Canada, and refuses to return to testify. The committee said Checov told an investigator in Vancouver that Shefferman hustled him out of the country so he would not be a witness in an unfair labor practices case growing out of Litell’s discharge. Whirlpool officials dehied any knowledge of a committee designed to keep the UAW out of the Marion plant. But they conceded that after haggling they paid Checov's heavy expense vouchers for food and drink for committee members. Chairman John L. McClellan (DArkJ, describing Checov as “a fugitive from justice.” read from the unsworn report of an investigator who interviewed the “industrial psychologist” in Vancouver. In the report Checov was quoted as saying he probably broke “every unfair labor practice law on the books” at Whirlppol-Marion, Says Spies Used The report also quoted Checov as saying Litell Was one of his “watchdogs” inside the plant who would talk with workers or eavesdrop on their conversations to spot

I pro-union men and raport them to the management through Checov. The plant is still non-union. An affidavit from Whirlpool employee Eldon Phillips said he helped Litell and Phillips set up the “vote no committee” and spied on fellow workers. Hufert and Glenn Evans, former general manager of the Marion plant, said Checov was fired because of his high expenses and because they learned he paid "small sums" to Litell. FLU FATALITIES (Continued from Page Scioto County, along the Ohio River in Ohio, reported 26 of its 37 schools closed when absenteeism hit 40 to 50 per cent Wednesday. Four Portsmouth, Ohio, football games were postponed. All classes were cancelled in Oakland. Me., and all schools in Silt. Vona and Sima, Colo., were closed. An influenza epidemic in Nebraska forced suspension of glasses at University High School in Lincoln and state health officials said the epidemic probably will be confirmed as Asian flu. U. S. sources would not say their delegation was ready to support the “send Hammarskjold ’ proposal although it was discussed by the United States with other delegations Wednesday. The Syrians, Russians and their supporters also discussed it privately. Some diplomats thought Saudi Arabia might ask for more time to let Saud try to mediate the Syri-an-Turkish dispute. If so, the General Assembly probably would vote for another and longer postponement of its debate when it meets Friday, thus putting off any formal move to send Hammarskjold to die Middle East immediately.
