MRS. WILLIAM AFFOLDER IS HOSTESS TO SORORITY Mrs. William Affolder recently entertained the members of the Xi Alpha Xi and Delta Lambda chapters of Beta Sigma Phi, at a “hard times” party. The affair was also a rush party for Mrs. Gene Ziner and Mrs. Darrel Kreischer. Canasta .was played, and prizes were awarded to Mrs. Lloyd Neil and Mrs. Francis Howell, with Mrs. Ziner receiving the door prize. The hostess was assisted by Mrs. Vernon Custer and Mrs. Martin Weiland in serving refreshments at the close of the meeting. LOCAL CLUB WOMEN TO LEAVE ON TRIP MONDAY Plans have been completed for the annual county home demonstration club women’s trip, which this year will be to New York City and West Point. Thirty-two women representing the county clubs will make the five-day trip, leaving from the Decatur post office next Monday morning at 8 o'clock- The women will return to Decatur about 5 p.m. Saturday. Mrs. Oran Schultz has been the chairman of the committee making arrangements for this year’s trip. V.F.W. AUXILIARY HOSTS DISTRICT LADYBUG MEET The second district Ladybug meeting was recently held at the V.F.W. home. Nineteen cities or towns were represented at the affair, and 19 women from Decatur were initiated. The local circle is called Buggy Nineteen—circle 13. Installation rites were conducted during the morning session, with installation services held that afternoon. Women interested in joining are asked to attend any of the meetings, held the second and fourth Monday evenings beginning at 8 p.m. MRS, ARCHIE SUSDORF TO SERVE CLUB AS PRESIDENT Mrs. Archie Susdorf was elected president of the Root township home demonstration club, a recent meeting of that organization, held at the home of Mrs. Russell Fleming. The all day meeting was opened by Mrs. Harold Owens, who led the members in repeating the club creed. Roll call was answered by each of the 27 members telling “what I have garnered for winter use.” Mrs. Norbert Aumann and Mrs. Nevin Miller presented the treasurer’s and secretary’s reports, respectively, followed by the citizenship lesson, given by Mrs. Lloyd Bowman. Other officers elected to serve during the coming year include vice president, Mrs. Royal Friend; secretary, Mrs. Sehrman Kunkel; treasurer. Mrs. Omer Merriman; assistant secretary, Mrs. Robert Johnson; assistant treasurer, Mrs, Al Schneider; first leader, Mrs. Lee Fleming; second leader, Mrs. Otto Spiegel; first alternate leader, Mrs. ’Adolph Weidler; second alternate ‘leader, Mrs. Wilson

Following devotions by Mrs. Kunkel, Mrs. Hdmer Ginter showed slides of the Vera Cruz opportunity school, and gave an interesting talk concerning activity there. A noon luncheon -was served from a table attractively decorated for the season. Mrs. Fleming was assisted by Mrs. Lee Fleming and Mrs. August Bohnke, in serving the club members and 22 children present for the meeting. The door prize was won by Mrs. Kunkel. DECATUR W.C.T.U. MEETS WITH MRS. BENJ. THOMAS Members the Decatur Women’s Christian Temperance Union met recently at the home of Mrs. Benj. Thomas, for a regular meeting. The lesson and program were curtailed as the union had attended a hearing of the alcoholic beverage board. ' The reading of "Hark to the call” opened the meeting, after which several articles were read from the “Union Signal.” Mrs. Thomas then presented the question “Where does your child get his ideals?” followed by a .group discussion. . An invitation was read inviting the local women to attend the state convention of the W.C.T.U.. to be held at Brazil, October 29 through November 1. Dues were then paid, followed by a social hour during which Mrs. Thomas served refreshments to the members and guests. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Delmer Gray. It has been pointed out that new members are being taken in at this time. A Halloween potluck supper wil) be served at the K. of C. hall Tuesday at 7 p.m., for members of the K. of C. Ladies auxiliary. The committee ’in charge will provide the meat, rolls and coffee. As this will also be guest night, members are urged to bring a guest to the party. Miss Rosemary Miller will show films of the construction of St. Mary’s church and of her recent trip. The Adams county demonstration chorus will practice Monday evening at 7:30. at the Methodist church in Monroe. Report Increase In Savings Bond Sales . Indiana’s U. S. savings bonds sales showed an impressive gain last month over the sales of a year ago, according to a report sent to T. F. Graliker, chairman of the Adams county U, S. savings bonds committee. It was the first time this .year that a gain in sales waK recorded over the sales of the like month of 1956. Sales for September were $10,921,971 compared with .59,549,262 percent. The national sales fitcrease was 8 percent. Fifty-three of Indiana’s ninetytwo counties reported sales gains, while several additional counties had sales that were approximately equal to sales of September, 1956. Adams county’s sales were $58,066.16 compared with $53,464.26 for September, of last year.

Church Speaker fe w The Presbyterian women’s association will have charge of the morning worship service at the First Presbyterian church Sunday on observance of the annual praise service. Mrs. Howard Washburn, above, president of the Indiana synodical, will be the speaker. She is also a member of the national council of Presbyterian women, serving on the commission of evangelism, an elder in the Presbyterian church at Kentland, and has recently returned from a visit to Presbyterian mission work in Cuba with members of the commission on evangelism. Dinner Meet Held At Trinity Church > Program Os Church J Outlined For Year More than 260 members of the Trinity Evangelical United Brethren church of Decatur enjoyed the congregational dinner'meeting of the every member canvass Wednesday night at the church. The planned program of the church for me next year was outlined during the meeting for the members of the congregation. Chalmer Bollenbacher acted as master of ceremonies. An effective hostess committee made possible the large attendance by personal invitation of all church members. The same committee, under its chairman, Mrs. Vernon Hill, also prepared the tables. Misses Fan and Madge Hite had as their guests this week Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Sellemeyerof California, Mrs. William Warner of New York, and Mrs. Charles Locke and Zoa Miller of Chicago.
Lutheran Pastors, Teachers Meeting Conferences Held By Pastors, Teachers Marriage and family life are the subject of the various essays to be delivered at the Northern Indiana Lutheran pastors conference which meets at St. Paul’s Lutheran church, South Bend, today and Friday. The conference opened this morning with a conference communibg service which the Rev. Prof. Robert L. Schroeter of Concordia Senior College, Fort Wayne, preached the sermon. The Rev. E. W. Broders is host pastor. Conference sessions, with the Rev. Arthur Ziegler of Huntington, presiding, were opened at 1 p.m. Some of the topics and speakers are as follows: "The Biblical Understanding of Marriage,” by the Rev. E. P. Weber, student pastor at Purdue University; "Preparation for Marriage,” by the Rev. Arbmin Oldsen of the Lutheran high school, Fort Wayne; and "The Christian Views Modern Psychology and Parent Education,” by Dr. John Vayhinger, child psychologist, child guidance clinic, South Bend. Among the 125 Lutheran pastors attending the conference are six from Adams county: the Revs. Otto C. Busse, St. Paul’s church; Fred Droegemuller, St. Peter’s church; Walter C. Vetter, Immanuel church; Edwin Jacob, St. John’s church; Albert A. Fenner, Friedheim church; and Edgar P.
