Monmouth's f / ■ wt A • Net Schedule Is Announced The Monmouth Eagles will open their 1957-58 basketball season Friday night, Nov. 8. meeting the Adams Central Greyhounds at the Adams Central gym. The schedule was announced today by Harold (Buzz) Clihkenbeard, new coach of the Eagles, who succeeds Charles Holt, Monmouth mentor for several seasons. The Eagles’ new mentor is faced with a tough rebuilding job, with four lettermen back from last year’s squad, which won only three games while losing 17 for Monmouth's poorest record in many years. Lettermen back from last season's squad are James Boer ger, a guard; Richard Brandt, center or forward; Fritz Bulmahn. center, and Wayne Myers, a guard, all seniors. Lost from last year’s team by graduation were Ron Bittner, Bob Hildebrand and Don Men ter. In addition, John Meyers, another regular. was lost at midseason because of the IHSAA age limit.

Other inembers of the varsity squad at present are Robert Keuncke, James McDougall and David Fuelling, seniors; Dwight Schaefer, Ronald Hoffman, and Larry Hoffman, juniors, and Marlin Blakey and Waldo Bultemeier, sophomores. Thirty-eight boys reported to Clinkenbeard for initial practice sessions, which have been badly hampered by illness. This 38 total included freshmen, and a freshman team is planned this season, with schools interested in booking freshman games asked to contact Clinkenbeard. The Eagles have a full 18-game schedule. Their -game with the Decatur Yellow Jackets is listed as a Monmouth home game but will be played at the Decatur gym. The final game of the season, with Rockcreek, is also a home game, but is not included on the season tickets, as it is only a one-season schedule. The schedule follows: Nov. Many College Gaines Out As Result Os Flu By UNITED PRESS Outbreaks of Asian flu wreaked havoc with college elevens today with more than a dozen football games cancelled or postponed as a result of the illness. Other teams, however, their ranks weakened by flu, planned to go ahead with their weekend commitments and let the record books tell the final story. The flu invasion caused the cancellation of Western Michigan University’s homecoming game with Washington University of St. Louis, due to illness on the Washington squad. Officials, at WMU said they would continue' to search for a suitable opponent to fill the schedule Saturday. On the East Coast, flu caused a series of cancellations and postponements, among them the Bowdoin College - Williams College match at Williamstown, Mass., and the game between Colby College and Trinity College at Hartford, Conn. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, scheduled to meet Union College at Troy, N.Y., scratched Its engagement, as did Slippery Rock and its opponent. Western Reserve University, slated to play at Slippery Rock, Pa. Washington and Jefferson College at Washington, Pa., crossed out its game with Thiel College. Bradley University at Peoria, Hl., had its homecoming plans marred when flu struck down players at the University of Omaha. Bradley, however, arranged a game with Colorado State University which, in turn, had found its game with Drake University cancelled due to flu. Juniata College, Kalamazoo, Mich., se( up a game with Kutztown Teachers College when Its regularly scheduled riyal, Lycoming College, was forced to cancel the mate*. A respiratory illness closed doyn Alfred University entirely, closing out its game with Hobart College. Wheaton College, Wheaton, BL, promptly came up with opponent in Kentucky State when flu caused the cancellation of a game with Illinois Wesleyan. Besides crippling innumerable high school, squads, the flu also made inroads in other athletic events and caused the cancellation of a cross country meet between Omaha University and South Dakota State. Calhoun Favored To Defeat Castellani NEW YORK (W — Middleweight contender Rory Calhoun, unveiling a new “jet jab,” is favored at 13-5 to beat artful Rocky Castellani tonight as boxing returns to Madison Square Garden after an absence of nearly six months. Their 10-rounder, featuring the first Garden fight - show since Isaac Logart outpointed Gil Turner on March 29, will be televised and broadcast nationally by NBC at 10 p.m. e.d.t.

Yellow Jackets And Columbia City Play Here Tonight At 8 The Decatur Yellow Jackets, nearing the end of their 1957 football season, tangle with the Columbia City Eagles tonight at Worthman field. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 8 o’clock, one-half hour later than starting time in previous games this season. The Jackets will be out to better their season record, which now stands at two victories and five losses. In the Northwestern Indiana conference race, Uie Jackets have won one and lost three. Decatur will wind up its season next Wednesday night, meeting the NEIC leading Kendallville Comets at Worthman Yield, also at 8 p.m. Pro Net League To Open Next Tuesday NEW YORK W - The Boston Celtics and the Si. Louis Hawks will pick up where they' left off last spring when they meet at St. Louis , next Tuesday night ip opening game of the 1957-58 National Basketball Association season. The Celtics captured the Eastern Division pennant last season and then won their first world championship by defeating the Hawks, 125-123, in double overtime in the seventh game of the final playoffs. A total of 288 games will be played in the pro circuit this season, with each of the eight member teams engaging in 72 contests. The Boston-St. Louis game is the only contest scheduled next Tuesday night. The following night the Hawks play the New York Knickerbockers and the Celtics meet the Detroit Pistons in a doubleheader at Detroit. The Philadelphia Warriors, with Tom Gola back from Army service, open their season against the Nationals at Syracuse on Oct. 25. AU eight teams will be in action Oct. 26. with Boston at New York, Philadelphia at Detroit, Minneapolis at St. Louis, and Syracuse at Cincinnati. Three South Gaines Tonight Open Schedule By UNITED PRESS The college football weekend opens Friday night with three solid games in the South, a prelude to a Saturday program featuring the presence of Queen Elizabeth at the Maryland-North Carolina game and battles for possible bowl berths. In the Friday attractions, Miami of Florida is a six-point favorite over unbeaten and surprising North Carolina State. Unbeaten Mississippi, co-leader in the Southeastern Conference, is a 14-point choice over Tulane. West Virginia, favored again in the Southern Conference, rates 13 points over George Washington. Royalty at College Park On Saturday, Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh, an old hand at cricket, polo and sailing, get a look at Americah-style football at College Park, Md., where Maryland entertains North Carolina. Carolina, an upset winner three straight weeks, is favored by seven points this time. Michigan State, the national leader in total offense, rushing, pass completion average and backfield depth, figures to be 21 points better than Purdue. Oklahoma, ranked No. 1 by the United Frets Board of Coaches all season until Michigan State dumped it to second place last week, is a 34-point choice over Kansas. The winner of the Oregon at Washington State game will take the lead in the race for the Pacific Coast Conference berth in the Rose Bowl. Betting is “even money.” In another tossup game which could produce a Sugar or Cotton Bowl team, Georgia Tech entertains an unbeaten Auburn dub which leads the nation in total defense.
