WEST (Continued trom Pag* Ona) aimed at enhancing the Soviet Union in the eyes of the Arabs. The diplomats said they saw little new in the latest blast. Lebanese Foreign Minister Charles Malik Tuesday reaffirmed at U. N. headquarters Lebanon’s pledge to side with the Arab world in a conflict with the West but to stand "unreservedly on the side of the free world” in the struggle against Communist ‘totalitarianism and dialtectical materialism.” > COMMUNITY (Continued on Page Fivo) _■ ams county cancer society, the Adams county mental health association, the Salvation Army, the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts, the United Service Organization and recreational equipment for the youth portion of the Community Center. ***- ■■***• ANNUAL (Continued from Page One) Health board figures show that pneumonia normally kills more than 1.000 Hoosiers each year. The total was 1,027 in 1955, 1,093 in 1956 and 693 through August this year. School administators seemed caught between theories of closing and staying open as the best means of meeting the absenteeism problem. Many schools closed to give the wave of ailments a chance to abate. But others with just as tug percentages absent kept doggedly on schedule except in instances where the illness riddled the teaching staffs. Purdue University cancelled intramural sports indefinitely and asked students to restrict their extra-curricular activities in an effort to conserve energies. As many as 1,000 students may have, or may have had, flu. At Logansport, 456 out of 1,700 high and junior high students were ill but officials made no plans to dismiss classes since only two teachers were affected. When only 18 boys appeared for football practice, five of them regulars, Coach Harvey Roberts of Logansport’s Berries called off practice Tuesday for the second day in a row and planned to consider today whether to cancel a game scheduled for Friday with Lafayette. Lucerne and Jefferson Twp. schools in Cass County closed Tuesday. Blountsville school in Henry County also closed Tuesday for the rest of the week. Other Henry County schools had above-normal absenteeism but planned to continue classes. Anderson noted an improvement with only 1,550 absences, lowest number in three weeks. But nearby Daleville’s school closed with 2 teachers and 125 pupils out. At least three state deaths blamed on respiratory ailments were reported unofficially, including an Earl Park father of four whose death was laid to influenza, a Logansport baby victim of pneumonia, and 13-year-old Ruby Roddy, Anderson, who died of pneumonia Monday.
