Warranty Program To Buyers Os Used Cars A warranty program that will protect used car buyers for a full year against the costs of repair or replacement of major mechanical parts was announced today by Harry Schwartz of Schwartz Ford Co., Inc. Schwartz said the inspection and guaranty program will be administered by the Car Warranty Corporation, a newly-formed company associated with Universal C.I.T. Credit Corporation, the nation’s largest independent automobile finance company. The warranty, Schwartz said, will guarantee that the car, under normal usage, will require no repairs or replacements for a full year to the engine, standard or automatic transmission, rear axle, clutch, steering, brakes, universal joints or water pump. TTie plan is available for passenger cars of the current year’s model or any of the three preceding years. SOVIET (Continued from Page One? tronautical Congress in Barcelona, Spain, let it be known they would rush home to press for an all-outt effort to beat Russia to manned space flight. The American scientists said nothing could prevent the Russians from being the first to land an objeett on the moon and added: “We must leapfrog the Russians beyond the moon to manned space flight. The war for the minds of the world is the most important war we will ever fight. We have- lost, through the Soviet satellite, more people than ever before.*’ More Encouraging Words More encouraging words came from Dr. Paul E. Klopsteg, associate director of research of the National Science Foundation. He said in Washington the United States is leading or abrest of other nations in many fields of basic research, including nuclear physics. However the clamor continued in Washington for an investigation to see if Russia's satellite warranted a fullscale congressional review of the U. S. missile program. Leading critic of the administration's program was Sen. Stuart Symington (D-Mo) who said the issue was of such grave importance these should be a full fledged investigation. He was backed by Sen. Alexander Wiley (R-Wis.) who said in Kansas City, Mo, that someone ni the Pentagon ‘goofed*’ In connection with satellite development and predicted “the artificial moon may utterly change concepts of warfare.” Criticism of the program and the long - simmering inter-service squabble broke out in Barcelona where U S. Army Maj. Gen. Holger Toftoy and Brig. Gen. John Barclay said the Army could have launched a satellite as far back as 1955 if the Navy had not interfered with the project. State Police provisional figures showed the year’s toll increased to 832 by last Sunday midnight, about four per cent below the 865 deaths recorded this time in 1956. ?. IKE HOPEFUL (Continued from Page One) consulted. He addeef that the United States would not take any sueb action if the Allies thought it would be bad. # U7s. NEW GROUP (ContlnuaJ from P«E« On a) Symmes said the defense Would argue that unless that could be proven true there would be no grounds for convicting Smith and the others named in the indictment. The four were accused of conspiring to embezzle $25,800 in public funds in the sale of right-of-way land in Indianapolis. The others are Nile Teverbaugh, Robert Peak and Harry Doggett Smith became acting chairman in December. 1954. but was not named permanent chairman until June 26, 1955. He was a commission member on the date mentioned in the indictment. Prosecutor John Tinder said Symmes’ statement was wrong because conspiracy does not have to be pinpointed on a pertain date to stand up in court. “In my humble opinion there’s no merit to it,’' Tinder said. As both sides reached the halfway point in exhausting a panel of 300 prospective jurors to hear the case, a battle shaped up on whether conspiracy could be proved by circumstantial evidence. Tinder claimed it could. The defense contended “a real and deliberate agreement” must be proved. FIRE '(ContinueJ on Page Five) “Our satellite program has never been conducted as a race with other nations,” he said. “Rather, it has been carefully scheduled as part of the scientific work of the International Geophysical Year.” The President, under questioning, said that the relationship between the Russian satellite and American national security did not raise his apprehensions one iota. The President was openly concerned, however, about the potential in the Russian rocket advance as reflected in the vehicle which launched the satellite. This, he said, showed that the Russian scientists have a very horrible thrust in their possession in the rocketry involved in launching their satellite.
