TV Season Stuffed By Musical Shows 11 New And Seven Holdover Musicals NEW YORK (UP) — The TV machine is stuffed with musical shows this Reason— 11 new ones and seven holdovers. One of the big puzzlers in the trade is how many wiU wind up victims of fallout. "A lot of them aren’t going to make ft,’ /said PoUy Bergen with melancholy detachment. “A lot of people are going to be off. Personally, I.wasn’t too sure myself whether I wanted to do thtis show. And I (haven’t decided yet whether I whs right in doing a series.” Miss Bergen, a 27-year-old export of Knoxville (where she was issued as NeUie-Paulina Burgin) is jockeying one of the new musical klatsches an every - other week Saturday night affair on NBC-TV. Busy At Home “I didn’t know whether I want ed to work this hard and then there were all my family responsibilities,” explained Miss Bergen as to her skittishness in taking on a show. “I have a 10-year-old daughter (her husband’s by a previous marriage) and a husband to take care of and an 11-room apartment to run. “We do atl awful lot of entertaining and in fact, when Dean Martin fell out as regular alternate to ihy series, they offered me the full 26 weeks on NBC and I turned it down. I didn’t want to do it. It was just too much.” Miss Bergen, a fugitive from the movies qnd nightclubs, hit TV paydirt last season when she capered as Helen Morgan on a CBS-TV “Playhouse 90.” “My biggest problem this year was deciding whether I should take on my own show this season or be a sought-after guest. One of the biggest problems in the business- is getting guests for shows. > Got The ‘Berries’ “But, well, I felt I had reached a point in my career where if I ever was to have a show now was the time. After that Morgan thing, I felt I was at a climactic point in my career. We felt we had to cash in now.’’ Her first show this foil was razzberried by some of the 'Critics, but Miss Bergen shrugged it I off. She also shrugged off two of ithe three writers she hired for jtha’t first show. ! ‘Believe me, when I say I 'didn't resent the reviews,” said Miss Bergen. “On the day before the show everybody knew it wasn’t falling together the way we had hoped it would. But it was the first show and nobody had the courage at the last moment to do anything about it. “The critics were right. But I also feel that first shows shouldn’t be reviewed. Nobody is ever at his best for a first show. Everybody is just too nervous. I know that when I did night clubs I always had a sore throat on opening night.” Believed Victim Os Hit-Run Accident INDIANAPOLIS IW — The body Os a man identified as James Edmond William Lee, 50, Indianapolis, Monday was found in a ditch just outside the southwestern city limits. Sheriff’s officers believed he was the victim of a hit-run accident. 4 Bus Drivers Safety Meeting Wednesday The fifth annual Adams county school bus drivers safety meeting will take place Wednesday at 8 p"7m. at the agriculture room of the Berne-French school, according to an announcement made today by Gail Grabill, county superintendent of schools. — A representative of the state police safety education section will conduct the program, which will feature a discussion entitled “School transportation is everyone's business.” A member of the state police school bus inspection . division wilt use a late model bus to conduct an orientation on the latest inspection procedures. ARKANSAS (ConUnued from Page One) 100 white students were standing around near the entrance, Waiting for the school bell to ring. They paid no particular heed to the Negroes' arrival. There was no shouting. no demonstration of any kind. reporF (Continued from Page One) trying to secure Teamster records, or if it is in fact a wilful defiance of the committee's authority and an attempt to obstruct its investigations,” he added. The documents in question are records of the convention’s cre- : dentials committee. The conven- i ' tion Seated hundreds of delegates ' [despite the Senate committee’s I ! statement it ’had evidence they i (had been chosen illegally.

Says Farmer Union Not Radical Group Organizer Explains Purposes Os Union "Is the Farmer’s Union in the sense of a laioor union? Certainly not, ,not any more than Farm Bureau members are bureaucrats,” Charles R. Johnson, organizer for the farm group, said today. < “The Indiana Farmer’s Union is a farm organization much like the Farm Bureau or Grange in organization. Its purposes are to back a farm plan which will allow the farmer a fair return for his labor and investiment. It is not radical in any way, and only ask that the farmer get a fair break,” he explained. "The term, “Farmer’s Union,” grew up in the period after the Civil War, when the word “union” stood for patriotism of the highest. Veterans who had risked their lives for the Union cause formed many organizations called unions. This was' long before the labor unions were heard of. “The Farmer’s Union was organized in 1902. and for many years was confined to the western states. It is not affiliated with any political party, nor with any other organization. Is state presiden, John Raber, of Elkhart county, is a Republican, but many of the members of the organtimtWi are Democrats’ Its only interest is to press for a fair farm program for farmers. “The Farmer’s union is now organizing in Adams county. Anyone interested who farms, or owns a farm, may join. When 100 members have joined, a charter will be granted to the county. At the present time, 60 counties are organized in this state. “The main interest of the Farmer’s Union is to raise pricey of things the farmer sells, in relation to other prices,” Johnson added. “Parity, which is a general term meaning a fair price to farmers in terms of other prices, is what the Farmer’s Union wants. It in no way encourages a sliding scale, which tends to slide downward,” he added. “Farmers who sincerely believe that they do not have to be driven to the wall, and forced into other industries, will be interesed in studying the Farmer's Union,” he emphasized. Lie Detector Test Slated For Suspect VALPARAISO — (W — Dauglas Brooks, 24, Gary, held in Porter County Jail here on first-degree burglary charges, was slated to be taken to Indianapolis today for a lie detector test in connection with the 1955 unsolved slayings of three Chicago boys. Brooks became a suspect when authorities found a cardboard box filled with clippings of the triple killing of brothers John and Anton Schuessler and Robert Peterson, a playmate, in his trailer home on U.S. 20 in Lake County last week.
