Commentsum on S.S. L .«i Creamed Comments on the Sunday School Lesson, Moral Standards in a Church, I Cot. 5:6-13; 6:17-20, for Sunday, October 13. More than any other institution, the church should take its stand against everything obviously wrong, since the church was founded by Christ and its standards are set forth in His teachings. The creeds of the church and its practical requirements of men are based on these teachings. Corinth

was a city infamous for Its immorality, a city which believed that only the spirit was of religious concern and that body and soul were man's to govern as he saw fit. High moral standards must be maintained by good church members. v . 6. "Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?" Paul considered any boasting on the part of the church members in Corinth very much out of place in view of their laxity regarding prevailing moral practices and the divisions in the church over trifles. Vs. 7, 8. “Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: . . Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth." The “old leaven” stands for the old life of sin. Taking positive action and purging themselves of their tolerance of sin in their midst was the first step. By connecting leaven with the Passover. Paul is reminding them of Christ's sacrifice. By keeping the feast wisely, they will carry on the work of the church in away that is free from malice and wickedness, and be true followers of the Christ who demands moral transformation and high ethical standards. Vs. 9, 10, 11. “I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators: . . . Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for them must ye needs go out of the world. . . But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such a one do not to eat.” The letter Paul referred to was probably not preserved. Paul refers specifically to those who had committed such sins as to be excluded from the sacraments and the fellowship of its members.
