Farmers Union Is Formed In County 100 Members Needed Before Charter Given The Farmers Union, a national organization for fanners founded |55 years ago, but long confined ' to file western states, is organizing in Adams county. There are now 60 counties organized in Indiana, which received its state charter in 1954. There must be 100 members in a county before a county charter is granted. The Farmers Union favors full I parity for farmers, and the pre- ' servatlon of the American “family type” farm, rather than encouraging the new, huge “corporate type” farms. The Farmers Union believes that the family is i being "squeezed out” by the bigger farms, owned by absentee landlords and operated by hired labor. Several Adams county farmers are now members of the Farmers Union, and more are now joining. Farmers may join the Farmers Union and still be members i of other farm organizations, Chariles R. Johnson, of route 4, New I Castle, stated. Johnson, a dirt farmer, is so interested in the organization that he spends his own time and money pushing membership. The Farmers Union is not affiliated in any way wth any other union or organization. It is strictly farmers farm organization. To qualify for membership one must be either a farm owner or farm operator. Rural ministers are elijgible as honorary members. ~~~ The national office is in Denver, Colo., with James G. Patton a ? Patton is a member of President Eisenhower's foreign trade committee. The Farmers Union was founded in 1902. For many years they confined their operations beyond the Mississippi river, but due to the , demonad of farmers on this side, they have moved eastward. Indi- ' ana was chartered with more than 5,000 members in September, 1954. The state office is located at 1331 N. Delaware street, Indianapolis. John C. Raber, an Elkhart

county farmer, is state president. “The first aim of the Farmer’s Union is to preserve America’s family type farm system,” Johnson saM. "Today the family farm is being squeezed out and replaced by large corporate type farms.” The Farmer's Union believes there is no such thing as a food surplus as long as we have hungry and undernourished people in our own country, and millions upon millions of hungry and starving people in other friendly countries," he added. “ It is not the will of God,” Johnson said,” for us American farmers to create a scarcity in order to receive full parity for our investment and labor. Which do you prefer —a sound farm program, or soup lines?” "The Farmer’s Union is opposed to the farm problem,” he pointed out. "The Farmer’s Union stands four-square for 100% parity for farmers in the market place. We know many of the Adams county farmers, as well as farmers throughout the mid-west, are feeling the effects of the sliding scale which means lower farm prices, and higher prices for the things they buy to operate their farms. “Farmer’s Union advocates the abolishment of the personal property tax and gross income tax, and their replacement with a net income tax. Farmers,” Johnson said, “have born the tax burden too long already. ' The Farmer’s Union works in three fields — education, cooperation, and legislation. Farm income has dropped more than 30%, he said. Farm expenses are at the highest peak in history. This has happened largely because farmers have been content to sit at home while other businesses have been talking to congressmen” Johnson said. “Wake up and find out what is going on!” he recommended. Practically all church organizations have endorsed the Farmers Union program, including the world council of churches at their meeting held in Chicago, he pointed out. Farmers interested in joining the Farmers Union should write to the Indiana Farmers Union, Inc., 1331 N. Delaware Street, Indianapolis 2, Ind. Tthc. in i> uiwt - Oecatm
