Comments J&j On S.S. - X Creamed Comments on the Sunday School Lesson, Paul Writes tc the Corinthians, I Cor. 1:1-3, 10-15, 21-25, for Sunday, October 6. Paul, originally known as Saul of Tarsus, is perhaps the most influential Christian who ever lived. He wrote 13 of the 27 books of the New Testament, interpreting the eternal Christ to the believers of every age. He chose Corinth, probably the most difficult city in the Roman world, in which to

make the Christian gospel work. . It was a city given over largely to the worship of wealth, license : in living, and the worship of Venus. This pagan environment was threatening to engulf the new coni verts and corrupt the fellowship, i Vs. 1,2, 3. “Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through 1 1 the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, . . Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours: . . Grace be untoi you, and peace* from God our Father. and from the Lord Jesus i Christ." Though not one of the twelve disciples, Paul was called of God to perform a unique mis sion, setting forth the fundamentals of Christian ethics. Sosthenes w.as probably his secretary. Paul reminded the Corinthian Christians they were to stand together and stand out from the pagans of the city. Grace and peace were Greek and Hebrew salutations which Paul combined to give them deeper meaning. V. 10.‘ "Now I beseech you. brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among yon; but that ye be perfectly joined together In the same mind and in the same judgment.” Paul urged the Christians to be united in the essentials and cease bickering about their preferences for the various leaders associated with the early church. Paul knew that Christian unity was essential, without which the church would’ fail. The devotion of every Christian should be centered in Christ who provided redemption through his death. Vs. 11, 12. “For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentktos among you. . . Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and, I am of Cephas: and, I of Christ.” Someone from Chloes household had doubtless reported the bickerings of the various groups in the church. .Paul was the first’ pastors Apollos,' the second pastor of the church, both of whom had their following; others who had heard Cephas (Petersl preach were loud in their praise o? him. resulting in the formation of various cliques which was an obstruction to the unity of the church. : Vs. 13, 14. 15. “Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? ... I thank God that I baptized none of you but Crispus and Gaius; . . . Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.” All true believers were followers of Christ only. Paul and the others Were merely his messengers. Only Christ was crucified and Christians were baptized in his name only. Paul minimized the fact that the one who administered baptismal rites was of any significance.' V. 21. “For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.” The wisdom of the world had failed to attain a knowledge of God. Such knowledge came only by divine revelation and the idea of a crucified Messiah seemed to many a foolish thing to preach. To Christians, the cross stood for the wisdom and oower of God, more powerful than the wisdom and power of men. Vs. 22, 23, 24 , 25. “For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom; . . But we oreach Christ crucified, unto the lews a stumbling block, and unto the Greeks foolishness; . . But unto them which are called, both lews and Greeks. Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God ... Because the foolishness of

God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.” Paul's preaching of a crucified Messiah, instead of a warrior Messiah conquering all enemies, was repugnant to the Jews and seemed plain foolishness to the Greeks, but the transforming power of Christ in men’s lives is more miraculous than anything man can effect.
