He has also worked at the Fort Wayne state school for the past two summers as recreational leader. Wemhoff, in making his resignation stated: “It is with a nostalgic feeling that I end my association with the city school system of Decatur. I have only fond memories, of my associations with the administration. teachers, pupils, parents and the press. “Working with such fine gentlemen in the field of coaching has been very gratifying and pleasant. Very seldom is one fortunate enough to have such fine associates in one school system. “The opportunity to move into an administrative position in Fort Wayne has prompted nje to mak« this decision. If I were not afforded such an opportunity to improve my professional status, I would never consider leaving such a fine school system and community. “My sincere thanks and appreciation go out to all who have made my stay in Decatur such a happy one.”

HANDLEY . (Continued from Page One) time. "I can’t beat my head against a stone wall,” said Handley as he explained once again tht he feels Hoosiers should respect the “intent" of the Legislture rather than the letter of the law. "I have no brief for fast or slow time, either way,” the governor said. "But I want to appeal to the people of Indiana to abide by the law to end this confusion once and for all.” He said he was “very sorry” Indianapolis city officials “have taken the action they have, but after all there’s no force or intimidation here nor can there be." Steers said if a city council adopts an ordinance calling for “fast” time it would be illegal but if it merely “adopted office hours, then that’s legal ” City Council and Mayor Phillip L. Bayt reached a "unanimous" decision late Wednesday that was expected to prompt dozens of other Central Indiana communities to circumvent Indiana's time law. Assuming industries and private citizens follow the council's lead, the move would in effect keep Indianapolis on Central paylight Time after Sept, 29. A 1957 law said official clocks—on the walls of schools and government offices—must be turned back to “slow” time on that date for the fall and winter months. But Atty. Gen- Edwin Steers ruled there would be no law violation in beginning office and school hours an hour early to get the same effect as "fast” time. He also said this could not be grounds for withholding state aid.

The council action presumably means Indianapolis would operatt on "fast” time the year around. The decision placed on limit on how long the plan should remain in effect. , Some Western Indiana communities were expected to revert to “slow" time at the end of October, rather than September,to coincide with the change in Chicago and other areas. But Indianapolis and a band of counties in the state's eastern half favored DST the year around Governor Handley, informed of the council action, repeated his order that Statehouse clocks will be set back and working hours will not be changed. Observers speculated the winter time pattern for Eastern and Central Indiana would be the sataie as a year ago—official clocks would show legal “slow” time but citizens would observe “fast” time. Western counties were expected to observe "slow" time.
