O o - It appears that the Milwaukee Braves and the New York Yank* have the inside track now for the final few days of the contests in the major leagues. Milwaukee is four games ahead of St Louis and the Yanks are twice that many games ahead of the White Sox. It should be a great series and might go the limit of seven games to determine a winner. Wise shoppers will read the advertisements daily in the Daily Democrat. Local merchant* are constantly striving to give the shoppers of this area the best merchandise at the lowest price. The majority of the local merchants are regular advertisers in Democrat because they know that the coverage is the best in the county and the rates are lower than any daily paper in northern Indiana. Let's give it a try and if we don't like it, let'* send members to th* general ***tmHy who will repeal it. The Union Pacific Railroad has recorded more than 8,350,000,000 passenger miles since its last passenger fatality on November U, 1951. —*—o In a solemn and impressive ceremony, four adults and a minor child became United States citizens in Adams Circuit Court Thursday morning. The Court Room was packed to capacity and Judge Myles F. Parrish presided. He accepted the motion of th* Federal examiner, and after the oath was administered by Richard Lewton, clerk of the Court, the Judge gave an impressive talk on being’ an American citizen. School* from various parts of the county attended and the entire ceremony waa one which will never be forgotten by the participants and the people attending. ■ o—o From seven reporting industries comes the news that employment dropped 24 in August compared with July and 127 compared with August of a year ago. Thia fact Is reported by the statistical department of the Chamber of Commerce and sufficient to cause worry but not fear. When employes are out of work, quite naturally they don't spend as much money and while merchants have not been affected yet by the slackening, if it continues, it could become quite worrisome. We ar* optimistic about Decatur and her future. AU we have to do is pull together and fight together instead of against. Decatur is head and shoulders above the other small cities of northern Indiana and we are sure it will remain that way. Let’s make sure that it does by constantly boosting'our city and what it has to offer.

CHAPTER 14 “MY NAME’S Donald Lam," I IVI said. "Here’s one of my cards.” Lucille Patton looked at the card, "Who’s B. Cool?" "Believe it or not," I told her, "the B stands for Bertha, my partner." "How cozy!” "Not when you know Bertha.” "Older?" “Older, heavier, tougher, and more skeptical." "How does it happen you got teamed up with her?” “It’s * long story." “And what do you want from me?” "1 was called in a few days ago to investigate a man by the name of Drury Wells; a client wanted to find his wife. 1 went to talk with Wells. Wells told me that they'd had a fight and his wife had gone away. He thought perhaps she'd gone away with another man." "Go on," she said. 1 said, "A neighbor living next door heard voices at night, heard the sound of a quarrel, heard a scream, then the sound of a blow, and silence. After that, Drury Wells went out of th* house carrying something over his shoulder. That something was wrapped up in a blanket or a rug. It could have been a body. It could have been blankets. He got a pick and shovel, dumped whatever he was carrying in his car, put in the pick and shovel and drove away. That was sometime after midnight He came back two hours and forty-five minutes later." She sat looking at me out of the corner of her eye, sizing me up, then she looked straight down the road for a few moments and said, "Anything else?" “Now we come to the. hard part Our client wouldn't pay us enough to complete the investigation. I had visions of a wife having been murdered. 1 called a friend on the police force and gave him the story. He went out, talked with the neighbor, came to the conclusion there’d been a murder. Wells wasn’t around. The police officer put the house under twenty-four-hour guard, hoping Wells would turn up. "Wells didn’t turn up, but the so-called wife did. She was alive, well and happy. The officer’s face is red, my face is red. Somehow I don’t think 1 have the whole story. 1 want the whole story.” "So you came up here, to see me?” "No. I came up here to see Wells’ wife. His legal wife. There’s never been a divorce. I thought she could give me a tip. O 1*57 tty Erie Stanley Gardner. Krom U

She dia give me a read. She thinks the second wife may be ; an Yvonne Clymer who made passes at Wells while they were living in Burbank. I know she la. “Your uncle died a short time ago. He left a section of property in San Bernardino County to bis niece, Yvonne Clymer. Newspaper reporters found her. She was Mrs. Drury Wells. She was to inherit the property and fifteen thousand in cash unless she predeceased the uncle, in which event you were to get it So 1 thought you might know something." "Where do you go from here?" she asked. "Back to Los Angeles.” "You’re on an expense account, otherwise you wouldn't be running around here renting cars.” She opened her purse, felt around Inside, pulled out the key, fitted it to the lock, Snapped her purse shut, tucked it in beside her and said, "Under the circumstances, Donald, 1 think you’re going to take me to dinner, and you may as well call me Lucille.” 1 said, “Apparently Tm the one who’s being kidnaped." "Do you want to call the cops?" “Not yet” “Perhaps you will later on," she said, as she eased the car away from the curb. ’’Exactly what's the big Idea?” I asked “I think,” she said, “I have something to tell you, but 1 have to know a lot more about you before 1 start talking. The best way a girl can tell about a man is to go to dinner with him, to dance with him, and see what sort of approach he uses.” “Okay," 1 said. “You’re putting me through my paces. Where are we going?” “Out to a restaurant where we can eat and have cocktails and dance.” “Don’t you want to stop by your apartment and freshen up first?" “I want to, but Tm not going to. That manager has big eyes, big ears, and apparently a big mouth.” 1 said, "She’ll put two and two together and figure out what happened.” “No, she won’t When I come in, she’ll tell me you were there, that she thought you Bad gone to look for me. Before she asks me if 1 saw you, I’ll ask her to describe you, what you looked like, whether you were nice and all of that 1 won’t lie to her. "Tricky, aren’t we?” I settled back in the seat. She handled the car with the skill of an expert. I closed my eyes. “Tired so soon?” she asked. *Hush,” 1 told her, “I'm concentrating.” “On what?” “I’m cramming for my exami inatlon,” 1 said. She laughed a throaty, melodious laugh that made me flash a quick look at her and reappraise the situation all over again. She was nice, but she wasn’t demure. She wasn't the least bit afraid of me, and 1 had an uneasy feeling that she’d been planning a campaign all the time she had been sitting there in the automobile asking me to tell her exactly what I wanted. We pulled into a rather swanky restaurant It was too early for much of a crowd in the dining room, but the cocktail lounge was pretty well filled. We went in there and when the waiter asked what we wanted, she ordered a Manhattan. Thad a Manhattan. Fifteen minutes later we had another Manhattan. Twenty minutes later we had another Man* hattan. The liquor had some effect on her and it had quite an effect on me. 1 could see that her eyes were glistening and her cheeks were slightly flushed. Her manner was a little more vivacious but she was keeping careful control of herself. "Are you,” 1 asked, “trying to make me drunk?” •T want to crash through your inhibitions.” "They’re crashed. When do we eat?” "Right now, if you say so.” She was not shy about eating. She had a New York cut, medium rare, "baked potato, avocado salad and coffee. I went along. There was a juke box in the place and we did a little dancing. She was nice. I held her as close as 1 dared, and she flashed me a glance from time to time that did things to me. We had dessert and two B & B’s. 1 shuddered to think of Bertha’s reactions to the expense account if 1 didn't fake it. We had another B & B, and 1 decided to fake hell out of the expense account We left the place, and when the attendant brought the car up, Lucille slid in behind the steering wheel . . . Plowing Supremacy Os World At Stake World Plow Match Is In Final Day PEEBLES, Ohio ff) - World plowing supremacy was at stake here today. Expert plowmen from all parts ol the globe met in friendly "sodbusting" competition in the final event of the twoday 1957 world plowing contest. The flags of 14 nations fluttered from 27 tractor-driven, two- furrow plows of all sizes and shapes lined up at half-acre sites for the sod-plowing event. Representing the United States in the competition were Lawrence Goettemoeller, 46, St. Henry, 0., and John Daniels, 35, Mulberry Grove, 111. Goettemoeller won his second straight national level land championship here at the U. S. plowing contest which preceded the world event. Goettemoeller and Daniels were out to win for America the Golden Plow Trophy and her first world title in international competition. The same idea was in the minds and hearts of champions from Canada, Great Britain, New Zeeland, France, West Germany, Italy, Norway, Belgium, The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Northern Ireland. The decision of Hugh Barr, Northern Ireland, not to compete this year assured the world of a new plowing champion. Barr won the title three straight years in the five years of competition. All but New Zealand had two men entered in the matches which began Thursday with stubble plowing over half-acre sites. The somewhat dry soil proved a challenge to the foreign experts, accustomed to cutting furrows in the much damper soil of their homelands. Most of them said the Hi hour time limit was “too little" because of the soil conditions. Goettemoeller and Daniels admitted the soil was a "little hard" but apparently had little trouble and seemed satisfied with their own performances. Contestants were permitted three hours in today's final phase of the contest. The two-day matches were in level land plowing only. A panel of 14 judges, one from each competing country, will decide the winner. Plowmen were judged on neatness, uniformity and straightness of furrow, burying of stubble and sod, proper
