New York Schools Drop Twain Book Apparently Due To Racial Passages NEW YORK (UP* — Mark) Twain's “The Adventures Os Huckleberry Finn’ has been drop- i ped as a textbook in New York’s : elementary and junior high! schools, apparently becuase of passages derogatory to Negroes, i ' The book, which relates the ex-1 periences of a boy and his friends ■ along the Mississippi River in the : 19th Century, also may be on its way out as a textbook in New York high schools. Miss Ethel Huggard, associate school superintendent in charge of | ] curriculum deveopment. con- i firmed Wednesday that the Board ] of Education had failed to renew 1 , three textbook contracts for the ' , book. She denied, however, that j | this stemmed from objections to: < the book, which is regarded as, | one of Twain s greatest wqrks. ’ Miss Huggard said the book,i ] published in 1885. was dropped as i i a text because it was decided it' ] was not actually a textbook. Copies •, of the book are still available. 1 1 however, in New York school | libraries, she said Dropping of the book was a, | matter of selection and without i "prejudice to the book,” she said, i But an official of one publishing ] firm said school authorities had < informed him that his company's ] contract for the book was not re- , newed because the work contained ] passages derogatory to Negroes. j A contract with another pub- < Usher, supplying New York high ] schools with the book, expires in i 1959. j Several organizations vocal in , the civil liberties field, including | the National Association for the ( Advancement of Colored People, said they had not protested about ] the book. However, a spokesman i for the NAACP said the organiza- ; tion objected to “racial slurs” and i ■ belittling racial resignations” in ] Mark Twain’s works. Trade in a good town — Decatur ,
