Cool Weather Slows Tomato Harvesting Labor Shortages Develop In State INDIANAPOLIS (UP) — Cool weather again delayed the peak of the Indiana tomato harvest well past mid-September and labor shortages were developing. That was the word today from the Indiana Employment. Security Division in its weekly farm labor bulletin which showed that 8,570 out-of-area workers were on duty last week in Hoosierland. 'Tomato ripening continues to be slow, almost at a standstill,** the report said. “Peak picking delayed until after middle of month. Part-time work making crews restless. Shortages starting to ap pear.*’ The report by areas: ANDERSON — Need hot dry weather to speed tomato ripening and to improve quality. Part of the traffic through the farm labor office at Elwood are “shoppers’* and crews seeking additional work to supplement part-time picking COLUMBUS—Sweet corn quality continues good. Quantity is slacking off. Tomato ripening slow. CONNERSVILLE — Sweet corn pack ending this week. Quality good, tonnage down. Tomato pick- ■ ing slow. Pickers restless. LAFAYETTE — Tomato processors limited to part-time operation by cool weather. Quality fair. LA Porte—With cool weather, anticipated shortage of peach pickers has not developed. Carrots, peppers and fresh market sweet corn are being harvested. Local women recruited to wash and bag produce. LAWRENCEBURG — Cool weather retarding ripening of tomatoes, LOGANSPORT — Tomatoes ripening more rapidly. Canning plants running at capacity. MARION—Tomato crop fading fast. Quality and quantity not too good as result of cool weather and late blight. Some plant workers have gone home to Arkansas and Tennessee MUNClE—Ripening of tomatoes almost at standstill because of cool weather. The main part of the pack for this area still in fields. Crews restless. Current labor shortage on spot basis. NEW CASTLE—Tomato processing plants still on part-time operation due to cool weather. First picking completed in most fields. Crews need more work to prevent restlessness. PERU—Sweet corn processing ending. Lima bean canning well under way. Tomato processing limited by cool weather. Deprived of food, a mole will die .in about a day.
