Appeal To Churches For Christian Unity Final Session Os Unity Conference -OBERLIN, Ohio (UP)-Protes-tant and orthodox leaders today called on “every local church and coneregation” to take up the quest for Christian unity. The appeal was made in a "message to the churches” presented for adoption at the final session of an eight-day unity conference attended by representatives of 47 U.S. and Canadian denominations. It said the Oberlin conference, first of its kind ever held in North America, disclosed unexpected solidarity “among Christians of the varied inheritance” on many points of doctrine But the conference acknowledged there are still important differences that must be resolved before unity in spirit can be translated into any kind of organizational unity. It said ministers and Christian laymen in every community must now join in exploring these differences and seeking for common grounds on which “the oneness of God’s people may be made manifest.” The churches unanimously adopted a resolution urging the National Council of Churches and the U.S. Conference for the World Council of Churches—sponsoring bodies for the Oberlin talks—to set up permanent machinery to guide local churches in this continuing study of issues and attitudes that bar the way to union.
