Urges Packers, Food Chains Be Regulated Tighter Regulation To Cut Food Costs % WASHINGTON (UP) — Sen. Joseph -C. O’Mahoney (D-Wyo.) called today for tighter antitrust regulation over large meat packers and food chains to help bring food prices down. “One of the most important phases of the battle against inflation and the high cost of living is the struggle to regulate the power now exercised by the large meat packers and food chains to fix the price the producers of agricultural commodities receive and the price consumers are required to pay,” O'Mahoney said. He made the statements in a speech prepared for delivery to a group of trade association executives supporting his bill to transfer antitrust enforcement under the Packers and Stockyards Act from the Department of Agriculture to the Federal Trade Commission. Under Agriculture Department policies. O’Mahoney said, “there has been virtually no enforcement whatsoever of those provisions of the act to limit the power” of packers and food chains. He said the FTC has forwarded 28 complaints under the act to the Agriculture Department but the department has taken no action on them“This dreary story has been repeated again and again for the past 26 years," he said. “We are engaged in a fight of the greatest importance and to win it is necessary for the trade associations to undertake a grass roots campaign,” he said, “so that both producers and consumers will know that the big national packers and food chains have actually taken over the power which the Constitution has given to Congress to regulate commerce in the interest of the public.” The trade associations O'Mahoney addressed included the National Farmers Union, National Association of Retail Grocers, National Federation of Independent Business Inc., and the National Retail Dry Goods Assn. . 4 Major League Leaders National League Flayer & Club G.
