To Offer Cartridge Case As Evidence Prosecution Opens Girard Case Friday MAEBASHI, Japan <UP) — The Japanese prosecution will confront U.S. Army Specialist 3C William S. Girard Friday with the empty cartridge case that killed Mrs. Naka Sakai on a U.S. firing range last January. The cartridge case, which the 22-year-old Ottawa, 111., GI allegedly shot at Mrs. Sakai, will be presented as evidence when the prosecution formally opens its manslaughter case before the Maebashi District Court. The most dramatic moment of the three-day hearing probably will occur on Saturday and Sunday when the court moves to the shelllocked Camp Weir firing range where the shooting took placeProsecution witnesses, including Girard's commanding officers and | Japanese citizens, were expected to testify to the firing of empty cartridge cases at Japanese metal pickers was a game with American Gls. Specialist 3CVictor M. Nickel. Inkster, Mich., a buddy who was with Girard was expected to testify that the soldier persuaded him to throw shells at Mrs. Sakai to ! lure her closer to them on the range. Hidetsugo Onozeki, another Japanese scrap collector who was with her at the time, also will take the stand. So will Kyuji Saki, a Japanese villager, who also was iat the scene. The U.S. embassy and Army will have official observers at the trial. However, it will be entirely under Japanese jurisdiction. FARMERS (Contlßiied from Pnge One) schoolteachers. The school marms and masters were county “Teachers of the Year.” The luck of the draw gave the “State Teacher of the Year’’ title to Gordon Straley, 40, athletic director and football coach at West Lafayette High School. The upturn in attendance and enthusiasm Wednesday gave promise of good attendance and high spirits today. Part of the enthusiasm could be traced to the glamor of the beef cattle. Judging began in beef divisions Wednesday when the Herpring. Mrs. Odie Brumfield. 53. Lizton, won the state crocheting title Wednesday afternoon She crocheted for an hour in competition with 17 other women before a packed house in the Women's Building, and won SSO for her achievement.
