Platypus Wandering Around In New York By DOC QUIGG' United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK (UP) - A brazen hussy of a platypus with the classic name of Penalope and the gall of a herd of ring-tailed monkeys has been wandering at large in the Bronx for a month. A platypus is a little animal from Australia, with a platter I where its puss ought to be. It also : has been called, variously, a duckmole, a, duckbill, and a living fossil. ■ . > 4 , Platypuses by nature are, as the I Scottish bard once remarked of a field mouse, “sleekit, cowering, j timorous, beasties.” One of the : definitions of sleekit is deceitful, . and, beleve me. that’s the word for Penalope. I found out the hard way. Before vanishing from her Bronx Zoo home a month ago. Penalope let it get bruited about in public that she was not pleasured with the mating overtures of her platypussarian associate, a bloke named Cecil. The theory advanced after her departure was that she jumped zoo because she simply could not stand Cecil. Publicity Stung My opinion, considered and kneaded for a month now, is that Penelope’s skipping out had nothing to do with maladroit love-mak-ing. It is clearly nothing but a publicity stunt, designed to call world attention to the plight of platypuses. She tried it once before—a stunt, that is. That was in the summer of 1953, when she let it be known that she was expecting. She did everything but start knitting litle things. She eating enormously, devouring crayfish like crazy. She busied herself carrying twigs and straw and other next makings into the winding tunnels of her mud-bank burrow. Zoo attendants were certain there was a nestful of tinypuses inside. This was big news to the world of zoos. No platypus ever had been born before outside Australia and Tasmania. It was a triumph for the Bronx. When, come November, no babes came out, it was decided to go in and get them. This involved digging out the whole platypussary, a name the zoo had assigned to the Cecil-Pene-lope home in a spasm of whimsy Reporters On Hand ; During all of Nov. 5, 1953, a dark and blustery day, a platoon of us reporters stood shivering and watching workmen remove a whole mudbank. Bossed by several platypus experts, they dug slowly and carefully by hand and trowel into a maze of interlocking tunnels. The more dirt they removed, the tenser we all became. Finally only one corner remained, then only two cubic feet, and then a man reached deep into a tunnel and {Milled out a wriggling little platypus. A great shout arose. Photographers flashed the pleaded for one more. Then a wise old zoo hand said: “looks like Penelope to me.” It was. There was no nest. No young. She hadn’t even laid an egg. But she had done one thing She had put platypuses on the front page. And she had laid their plight on the world’s doorstep. Their trouble is, they can’t decide where, m nature, they’re going—what they want to be. They’ve got a bill like a duck, no teeth, dense fur like an animal, webbed feet; they lay eggs like a bird, swim like a fish, burrow in the ground like a mole, and have poison-gland heel horns—like a dragon. Can’t somebody, somewhere, make up their mind for them? • _— Pip Ten Judges Named For Friday, Saturday Judges pro tern have been appointed to Adams circuit court for today and tomorrow by Judge Myles Parrish who is out of town. Severin Schurger was named temporary judge for today and Robert Smith will serve as judge Saturday.

Fired Employe Held In Bombing Attempt CHICAGO (UP) - Authorities today held a recently discharged mail handler under $15,000 bond following his berserk shooting spree in the lobby of the United States courthouse. James B. Jennings. 32, entered the crowded building Thursday armed with a pistol, a crude bullet-proof vest and three homemade bombs. Jennings fired three shots in the lobby and then fled to a washroom where he fired three more times as guards shot into the washroom door and ordered him to surrenderNo one was injured. In his pocket, police found a note complaining he had been fired unjustly from his postal job. The letter said his discharge was “indecent in the sight of man.” Jennings was arraigned on a charge of firing a deadly weapon in a government building and held for a hearing Sept. 4. Bond Reduction For Former Officer Asked Attorney Asks For Cut To About $50,000 CANNELTON, Ind. (UP) — Attorneys for former Perry County Treasurer Earl Kieser late Thursday asked Circuit Judge U. Marlin Ewing to reduce the accused embezzler's bail from $250, 000 to “around $50,000.” A State Board of Accounts audit recently certified that Kieser embezzled $255,876.40 while serving as county treasurer. The total was expected to exceed that figure when the final cheek of county records is completed. Kieser appeared in court with his attorney, Paul Mason, to ask Ewing for a reduction in bail. Mason said embezzlement is a bailable charge, but Kieser’s bail was set so high he could not possibly secure it and obtain release from Perry County Jail. Ewing said he would take the matter under advisement and would rule Tuesday, the same day a grand jury is scheduled to begin an investigation of the case. Ball Points JANESVILLE, Wis. — (IP) — Ballpoint pens now outsell conventional fountain pens four to one with an estimated sale of 200 million ball points last year. The ball point was invented in 1888, but mass production was not started until 1945. Prices have dropped from the $12.50 per pen charged immediately after the war to less than 50 cents each. The industry expects to be selling 350 million ball points a year by 1957.

Trio Is Captured After Holdup Series Confess Killing Os Man And Kidnapping EVANSVILLE <UP)—Three men who said they killed a man, then threatened to shoot a hitchhiker were captured today following a series of filling station holdups. The hitchhiker was dumped along a highway. He apparently suffered no serious injureis. The men were identified as Harold E. Mattingly, 21, Mt. Vernon, Ind.; George Edward Horton. 27, and James Albert Fulkerson, 3,0 both of Uniontown, Ky. Police said the three held up an Evansville filling station late Thursday night, then apparently drove back across the IndianaKentucky state-line. The hitchhiker, Van Adans, 20, Kadiz, Ky., told police he was picked up along U.S. 41 between Evansville and Henderson, Ky. He said they took him into Evansville but refused to let him out of the car as they drove through the city for about two hours Finally, they stopped at another service station, made a purchase, and drove into a nearby airport parking lot. Adans told police the three men threatened him with a gun and said they would kill him if he cried out. Adans said two of the robbers waited in the car while a third went into the station and robbed the owner of $143. He said the men then beat him and shoved ' him from the car about a mile from the station on U.S. 41. Adans then called police. Police said they received a report on a third filling station robbery shortly after being contacted by Adans. Det. Sgts. Theodore Karges and Elmer Brackett raced to the scene and apprehended the trio as they sat in their car about a block from the scene of the robbery. Adans quoted the bandits as saying they “killed” a man near Henderson and tossed his body in a dump. Kentucky State Police found the unidentified victim along U S. 41, and rushed him to a Henderson hospital where he was reported in “very critical” condition. The three were taken to City Jail here on preliminary charges of armed robbery pending a hearing today. Victor Kneuss Named As Jaintor At School Victor Kneuss of 737 Cleveland street has been appointed custodian at Lincoln grade school to replace Harve Baker who is retiring. Announcement of the appointment was made today by W. Guy Brown, superintendent of schools. Kneuss has been employed with the Sherman White company which is discontinuing operations here. He formerly served for a period of six years with the Hartford center school as custodian. Baker who submitted his intention of resigning last June has | been working through the summer. He was honored with a retirement gift which was presented to him Thursday afternoon by ) his co-workers in the custodian staff of the public school system. Attending a farewell get-together for him yesterday were the custodians and Mr. Brown.
