Confesses Killing Os Reformatory Inmate PENDLETON, Ind. (UP)-Indi-ana Reformatory Supt. Paul Whelchel said an inmate has confessed th? fatal knifing of Jack Luther Smith, 29, Detroit, in the prison tailor shop last Thursday because Smith “threatened to kill me." Whelchel identified* the inmate as William Franklin, one of twArmen in the tailor shop at the time of Smith's death. Smith's body was found in a restroom just off the reformatory’s third-floor tailor shop. His throat had been cut and several stab wounds were discovered in his body. A “homemade” knife was found on the ground below a tailbr shop window. Whelchel said Goodwin signed a statement in which he said he and a fellow inmate “had a few words among ourselves” and the stabbing “was a matter of jealousy.” The other inmate, whom Whelchel did not identify, was not implicated in Smith’s death. Goodwin, sentenced from Johnson County in 1953 to a l-to-5 year term for passing frauduleht checks, was twice paroled and twice returned to the Reformatory for parole violation, Whelchel
