Creamed Comments on the Sftnday school Lesson, Josiah, Statesman and Reformer, 2 Kings 22:1-1; 23:1-5,25, for Sunday, September 1. A century had elapsed since Amos made his prophesies. Josiah lived in the last half century of the Independent national life of Judah. Israel had been conquered, by the Assyrians, but Judah had been spared through the prayers of Isaiah and the leadership of the

godly king, Hezekiah. Tl<e period following was a time of spiritual decay under the rule of Manasseh. V. 1, 2. “Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigntd thirty and one years in Jerusalem. Anr his mother's name was Jedidah, the daughter of Adaiah of Boscath . . . And ihe did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in all the way of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left.” Josiah’s father. Amon, was an evil ruler, and was assassinated when he was 23 years old. His mother must have provided the godly influence in his life causing him to follow in the ways of David, who was considered the model king. Vs. 1, 2. “And the king sent, and they gathered unto him all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. . And the king went up into the house of the Lord, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great: and he read in their ears all ahe words of the book of the covenant which was found in the house of the Lord. Josiah started his reforms by destroying the idols and all the sacred paraphernalia of paganism. Then he ordered the repair of the temple which had come to be dilapidated during the years of idol worship. While the temple was undergoing repairs, a copy of the laws set forth in the book of Deuteronomy was found and taken to the king. After reading them and realizing how the laws had been broken, he called the people together to hear the laws and make a new covenant to God. V. 3. “And the king stood by a pillar, and made a covenant before the Lord, to walk after the Lord, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statues with all their heart and all their soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant.” The people were deeply mowd and ready for action. The decision of the people to keep God’s commandments and their turning to God with their whole heart fulfilled what Christ said was the first and greatest commandment. The people showed their willingness to follow the king’s leadership in the renewal of their covenant with God. V. 4. “And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, and the priest of the second order, and the keepers of the door, to bring forth out of the temple of the Lord for all the vessels that were made for Baal, and for the grove, and for all the host of heaven: and he burned them without Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them unto Bethel.” This verse reveals how far the nation had drifted from God. Bethel was the source of the pagan infiltration of Judah and a logical place for the ashes of the idals to be conveyed. Worship of the sun, moon and stars was also indulged in —a characteristic of the Babylonian religion which Judah had adopted. , V. 5. “And he put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense unto Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven.” Manasseh had rebuilt the altars for the worship of the heavenly bodies which Hezekiah had previously destroyed. The kings appointed the priests of the second order who carried out their wishes and were not servants of God. V. 25. “And like unto him was there no kings before him. that

turned to the Lord with his heart and with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the law of Moses; neither after him arose there any like him." Josiah's name means “the Lord leads” and truly God led him to work miracles of reformation, chief of which was the re-discovery of the Bible and putting its teachings into practise. Unforunately Josiah, while still young, was killed in battle, and after his death, his reforms collapsed. A unit of the National Council of Churches recently announced plans to build a 100,000-watt broadcasting station in the Near East. Protestants, Cathollics and Jews took part in the uneveiling of a nine-foot monument at the entrance of a grocery store at Elsinore, California. The grocer, Joseph Majas, built-the monument to express his faith in ‘God, the Constitution, and Justice.” A Jewish attorney presented Mr. Majas with a copy of the Ten Commandments in behalf of the Jewish community. A Catholic priest and a Presbyteran minister both took part in the unveiling ceremony. The monument contains soil from 48 states, Hawaii, Alaska, the Washington and Lincoln monuments, the Unknown Soldier’s grave, and the Capitol in Washington.
