More Information Needed On Deaths Ask Investigation Os Cancer Deaths WASHINGTON (IB — Assistant Defense Secretary Frank B. Berry said Tuesday a great deal more information is needed to reach a conclusion on the cancer deaths of three former servicemen reported to have taken part in atomic tests. Berry, a practicing physician for 30 years, said from experience “we know that it takes a good many years for those expc/ ed to radiation to develop this disease.” Berry said he needed to know where and when the three men died and what post mortem examinations had revealed. The deaths of Pfc. Dale B. Mock and Pfc. Larry H. Fitz, both of Toledo, Ohio, and an unidentified young New Yorker were disclosed by Rep. Thomas L. Ashley (D-Ohio), who requested an investigation. Ashley said each died within a year of each other before they had reached 30. They were together in the Army when they were exposed to atomic tests in Nevada, he claimed. Berry said that there have been no previously reported cases of deaths from exposure to nuclear tests. However, he said the department would be happy to investigate “as thoroughly as possible.” SIMONS <Co»tl«»e4 rr«M Page Oa») Ordered To Bed Simons was whisked in a helicopter, accompanied by Otto Winzen, head of the firm that built the balloon, to Fargo, N.D. There he freshened up and. telephoned the exciting news to his wife in Alamogordo, N.M., where Simons is stationed with the Aeromedicine Research Center. He later was flown to Minneapolis and went straight to bed for 24 hours of sleep prescribed by Col. John Stapp, chief of the Aeromedicine Center and director of Project Man-High. The Air Force said Simons will hold a news conference tonight. Speaking briefly with newsmen after his landing Tuesday, Simons said his greatest thrill was '‘getting back to earth.” He said the “capsule (gondola) operated perfectly" during the marathon flight. The gondola was undamaged in the landing, and the Air Force and Winzen Research Co. began an immediate study of the comprehensive reports recorded on instruments in the capsule. An Air Force spokesman termed the flight "most successful.” He said much significant data was obtained, but it will take some time to analyze the information. Trade in a good town — Deeatnr
