GOODS STOLEN (C*wtl»u»6 ft*i* Faae <>—> July 21, Georgia’s Market, Starke county, O.; August 1, MazeUns here in Decatur; August 8, Frank's Food Market in Elyria, 0.. and Fenton's LG.A. store in Starke county, O. Following the last robbery they critically wounded the town marshal at Louisville. 0., and then were captured near Canton last week after terrorizing a farm family of five held captive for 24 hours while they hid from police. Authorities said they believed the men grossed about 96,000 in their two-month crime foray. The Starke county police officers discovered that the three had an apartment in Indianapolis, and called in the Indiana state police, Indianapolis city police, the Adams county sheriff, and Decatur chief of police. From the Indiana state police Sgt. Truman Bierie, detective from district 2-A, and detective sergeants James Hines and George Young from the state headquarters, joined in the operation. Inspector of detectives Robert Rielly, of the Indianapolis police department, assigned Lt. Henry McMahon and Sgt. Robert Morrison to the case. Sheriff Affolder and chief Borders drove to Indianapolis Thursday and joined the group. A search warrant was obtained for the apartment, but very little, except a plush bar stocked with liquor and expensive serving equipment, and the seven automatic pistols, was found. The police officers then called in Dwight and Betty Swain, owners of the apartment. After being questioned at length by the Indianapqlis police, they admitted hearing about the capture of their tenants. When they realized that the tenants had stolen a lot of property, they entered the apartment, boxed all of it up in old partons, and stored it in the gables of the attic. They then prepared to rent out the downtown apartment. The raid was made at 4 p.m. Thursday, and the stolen merchandise returned at 10:15 a.m. today to Mazelin. The Ohio officers now holding the men for shooting a police officer and 12 armed robberies are reported unwilling to return the men to Indiana to be tried in Adams county. They will be tried instead in the county where they were captured, and where they committed the major crimes. (UP)—A magazine article that stirred up a controversy 2R years ago served as a “do-it-ydurself" guide for a young father who brought his second son into the world. Both mother and son were “doing well,” doctors said after Robert C. Thomas performed an emergency delivery early Thursday morning. “He did a pretty good job,” said Dr. Floyd Boyer, the physician who took over where the 21-year-old father left off. The Life magazine article, which stirred a furor at the time it was published, contained detailed pictures of childbirth taken from the movie "Birth of a Baby." Thomas’ mother had stored the article away over the years but gave it to the young couple recently when told they were expecting their second child. Thomas, head shipper for Columbia Pictures Distributors at Indianapolis, and his wife, Dixie Lou, studied the text and photographs, little realizing they were taking a “practical” Course in childbirth. About 5 a.m. Dixie Lou awakened her husband and informed him she was having labor pains. Thomas said he “didn’t pay much attention” at first because he was still groggy. Then Dixie Lou got out of bed. he said, and told him she thought the time had come. "She laid down on the bed and ...bingo!” Thomas said. Thomas realized there was no time to call a doctor. Whatever had to be done, had to be done immediately. Now fully wake, Images of the 20-year-old photographs began to take form in his mind, guiding him as he helped deliver his second son. “I wasn't nervous until it was all over,” Thomas said. "Then, I was kind of shaky.'* Mrs. Thomas and their baby were taken to a hospital, leaving the “midwife” to glow with satisfaction over his wife’s tribute.
